Every so often the odometer on my car goes back to zero (digital)

Just wondering if there's a way to find out the true mileage of the car as obviously the one displayed only shows the milage from when it last went back to 0 ?

push the button several times. Depending on the year/model/computer it should scroll through several menus such as odomoeter, trip A, trip B, max mpg, average empt etc....

If it's a MK1 hit the button that says Trip on it, it should just eventually switch around to ODO.
