alright folks i've come into some funds and wish to treat myself to a new set of clubs.

What buying advice would you give for buying a set of irons firstly?

I was looking at the Titleist Ap1's and then getting a 54' and 60' wedge. What sort of things should i consider before choosing a set?

What advice would people have when buying a putter? I was looking at the Scotty Cameron bladed putter, i generally want to feel a bit of weight in the putter too.

And finally what advice for buying drivers/3 woods/hybrid clubs? I imagine shaft selection would be an important aspect of this?

Have to say for the putter Mc Guirks in Airside have a super selection and a small putting green which will help you narrow down your choices. i would say you have to have a great putting stroke for a Scotty lovley putters but the least forgiving on miss hits that i have used.
For all the rest of the gear now is a super time to buy as most things are reduced coming to the end of the season.
You really have to get a custom fit, for me i think that the like of the Grange in Kinsealy is fine unless you are a really low handicapper i don't think you will get any extra benefit from going to the likes of Fore golf.

Yeah, get the putter on airside , I spent hours there and bought the odyssey Versa 7, the face inserts in the putters are unmatchable for feel IMO.

Ping have some blinding putters out but are in the €200 plus range, try the Ketsch, great putter if you want the face balanced type.

Scotty's are obviously good but do not by for the brand.

Do you have a wide arc or more straight, and where do your eyes line up in relation to the ball?

This can help you narrow down putters that could suit you better.

Am in the exact same position as yourself..Although I am a beginner, I know I will play golf (maybe, on and off) for the very forseable future so I want to get a good set of clubs.

Am currently looking at Titleist AP1's, TM Rocketblades and Mizuno JPX-Ez...Anyone got these clubs and can offer some advise?

Not sure what driver to go for either though

You need to hit as many as possiable decide on which brand you like the best then get a fitting.

If I was buying a new set of irons tomorrow, I'd buy Titleist Ap's in a heartbeat. Beautiful club. And their fitters are some of the best in the business. They are usually doing the rounds through driving ranges and golf clubs through summer, or you can go down to them at Carton House I believe.

I'm using Taylor MAde Burner 2.0 irons at the moment and love them, but be lying if I said I wasn't hankering for a set of Ap2's.

How do you find out what type of stroke it is and how your eyes line up in relaiton to the ball?

You can do it in a mirror to get a rough idea, but there is a mirror Odyssey have at the stores where you setup and it shows you where your eye is in relation to the ball and what style putter might suit.

The arc is easy enough to see. I'm sure there is some but of A4 you could print off and putt over to give you a good indication.

But it's all feel at the end of the day with the putter. Can you bring it back and through smoothly, and can you feel the ball enough to have good feedback for distance control.

Weight and shape of the putter head is huge for this

Ping do a phone app called the iPing that is good for finding out what type of putting stroke you have. The phone is attached to the putter and follow the app instructions. It then gives a recommendation for type of putter that most suits your putting stroke.
The app is free but the cradle to attach to the putter costs about €30, although and old case and tape can work too.

Its not just for fitting a putter - there are good practice features on the app too and its not just for Ping putters.

In saying all that, getting fitted for a putter is best.

cheers for the advice, got myself the AP1 irons after getting a fitting as well as a vokey 52'

managed to get a ping karsten anser 2 putter as well.

managed to knock almost every putt dead yesterday already a massive improvement seen in my putting, may all be psychological but what harm as long as it helps!!

all thats left is to pick up a vokey 58' and then onto the new titleist 915's when they are released!!

When you say you came into some funds, did you knock over a bank?

Trés jealous. I'm eyeing up the Titleist AP range for over a year now. Everything in my bag, including the bag, is Titleist. Feel naughty with my TM irons :D

i'm getting to that level now with the irons and vokeys. holding off on the drivers/3wood/hybrid until the 915 range comes out. all i'll be short then is a scotty putter but i'm quite liking my ping anser at the moment!
