I noticed a very distinct ticking noise when my E46 was idling yesterday and my first thought was tappets. Are they prone to going on this model, what should I be looking to do about it? If not tappets, then what other possibilities are there? Paranoia? :)

Could be an exhaust manifold leak. I had this and was convinced it was the valve train.

Cheers, have seen a few people mention the oil level, I'll start with that.
