    Hi,

We've been quoted close to 800Euros for survey work to be carried out before/during/after the knocking of the wall between two rooms in our house, with a steel Jbeam appox. 3.5m put in place instead.

Would this be the going rate or thereabouts for this type of work ?

    Thanks in advance,
    R

Thanks. Seems to me that many people go ahead and get work like this done without a surveyor in attedence.

    Any opinions on that ?

Yes they do. The same approach scaled up and you get the likes of Priory Hall.

have you not watched the programme "cowboy builders". Watch an episode and it will answer all of your queries as to why third party professionals exist and why the should be used.

How many surveyors have actually done something like this rather than read how it should be done ???

Get a few more quotes from builders also, for all you know the wall might not be load bearing at all.
A good builder will have his own engineer spec the steel for this job and that cost would be built in to the total price.
You should be looking at around the €3000 max mark for this job.
Always get a copy of their insurance and get some references for some previous demolition work
    Where are you based??

probably a lot more than self builders who have watched grand designs and think they can self build........

I would have taught this would be one of the simplest things for an engineer to do in terms of what they can come up against.

Yeah , fancy book learning and clean hands never dirtied by "real" work.

That attitiude ultimately leads to the likes of Priory Hall.
