Paint gone mouldly & disposal

We painted a room in our house in April this year and used had half a tin leftover. We put the lid back on and put a bit of strong tape over it and put it in the downstairs back room which is currently our shed til we get one! It was keep away from bright light and heat sources.

We opened the tin on Sat morn to use it for another room and the top of the paint and the paint on the lid was black moulded.

What could have caused it to go mouldy? As far as we could see the tin was sealed. It was stored beside a container of white ceiling paint which was perfect inside. It was a cream Fleetwood paint, think it was mid sheen.

Also, what is the correct way to dispose of unused paint?

Very odd for a part-used tin of paint to go mouldy - I can only think that whatever brush you used introduced something to the tin which acted as a catalyst.

The recycling centres will take paint but they will usually charge - eg Ballyogan:

(If its only one thing I believe they are flexible on the charges)

Did you put water in the paint?
Or if there was any water in the paint, the tin will gather condensation and causes mould and causes it to go black.
