Hailo not accepting cards

Ordered a taxi earlier and hopped in. Driver asked me if I had received an e-mail from Hailo saying that credit cards are no longer being accepted due to fraud issues and that I would have to pay in cash. Fortunately I had cash on me at the time. I've googled to find more information about this but haven't turned up anything yet. Anyone else come across this or know what it's about?

Driver sounds like a chancer, guess he wanted cash in hand.

That's what I was wondering about. What's the difference though? Does it take a long time for payments to make it to drivers' accounts from a card?

Driver told me that you can only see whether it's cash or card on pick up now due to lots of drivers cancelling card jobs. He just said they wanted money in hand instead of at the end of the week. Maybe email hailo and advise them of what happened?

It was processed in the Hailo app as a cash transaction so there was a trace.

I read somewhere that it's because Visa are taking legal action against Hailo because of the way card transactions are being processed (through an app?) and they're having to introduce their own chip and pin terminals.

Not the taximen's fault this time.

He was chancing it because they prefer cash. I'd report him to Halo. It's so backwards when taxi drivers don't take card, it's not 1988 anymore. Adapt or perish

2 years ago i flew into dublin on business and had no cash, if i wanted to claim the fare from the company i needed to pay with card. I walked down the entire line of taxis outside the terminal(about 20 of them) and not one of them would take card. I asked the taxi rank guy if he could call me one which would take card and he said "sure one is bound to show up soon." I walked 20 feet to the aircoach and they took the card(some guy was standing with a make-shift desk that had a portable card machine) and the fare was only 6 euro. So taxis can f**k off whenever they play the poor mans card

    Do revenue check Hailo apps?

This page might explain the problem. Hailo used to allow drivers to accept card payments from people who weren't Hailo customers but this is no longer allowed by Visa because of the risk profile. If I'm reading it right, this doesn't affect payment by card for registered customers. It sounds like the taxi driver just got mixed up.

Just register your CC with Hailo, problem solved

If you register the card OP it solves all problems :)

And yes Hailo changed the system so drivers will not know if you are a card or cash job until they are arrive and mark passenger on board

It stops drivers cancelling card jobs

    This is not entirely correct.

Hailo introduced a feature for taxis where they could pick someone up off the street and take credit card payments without a chip-and-pin terminal, by using the Hailo app. The CC companies were concerned that this was a entry point for fraud and so Hailo removed this functionality.

When you book a taxi using the Hailo app, you can still pay with card because the driver never sees the card.

I was wondering why there were a couple of weeks there where I seemed to be getting bumped by at least one driver before someone would pick me up.

Someone else mentioned this in another thread - clearly drivers are preferring cash so that they can lie to Hailo about how much the fare was.

I'm curious, when you install Hailo, you have to set a minimum standard tip. (Mine is set at zero, I'll tip if I want to on each journey.)

Can drivers see your minimum tip? When you book the journey?

Then tell Hailo so they can tell the driver the email sent doesn't mean they can't take any cards just those that were non Hailo registered

AFAIK there is supposed to be a new "Pay-with-Hailo" function being brought in, NOT the same as registered but again AFAIK not implemented yet

No the drivers see nothing other than the pick up point untill they press ARRIVED when they might see the destination ( If you've set one ) No other information is availiable until "Take Payment" screen and even then on a CC job you only see the tip amount not the %.

I like the idea of a seperate cash tip if that's what you mean, saves giving Hailo 12% of the gratuity, also prefer customers to pay cash for tolls etc. as it's a flurry of emails to remove the 12% off the tolls bit of a fare :)

    Hailo take 12% of tips?

Reminds me of my hotel days when management pocketed the tips :(
