VW Golf TSI 1.4 Exhaust light + P0016 code

    Hi

Hoping there's some VW heads in here that might be able to help me out, I have a 1.4 TSI Golf 08 reporting a P0016 fault code and exhaust light on the dash, the car idles very badly when cold it will bounce between 500-1000 Revs and sometimes cut out.

It runs absolutely fine when moving, I'm 99% sure this appeared after my last service a couple of thousand miles ago, like instantly after the service I noticed the light on the dash and the funny idling, I've done googling and worryingly the P0016 code refers to Camshaft/Crankshaft Correlation issue and that looks quite serious, but the fact the car runs perfect when moving leads me to think it may be a dodgy sensor or something?

Anybody got any ideas on this? I've got it booked in with an official VW garage Wednesday but I'll like to understand more about before then.

I'd say if it did appear right after the service then one of the relevant sensors got pulled.

What was done during the service?

Check the sensors, see is a wire pulled, sensor not connected properly etc.

General service, Oil change and Oil filter I suppose, Yeah I'll give it a visual look now, there's so many sensors that could have been pulled thou

Those tsi engine stretch the timing chains and throw a code like that, I'd have the chain checked as it's a known issue with them.

Yeah ultimately fearing a stretched chain, It's the 1.4 122BHP version I think.

What should I expect with a stretched chain? Will it have caused other damage? am I looking at a big bill? Should I not notice a difference in driving? It's strange that the fault popped up after a service.

After reading a few of the horror stories with this engine online, there's 50k Miles on it, I wonder what the chances of VW partially paying a problem they've admitted to, or worse comes to worse, does fully comprehensive insurance cover this type of thing?

Worse case scenario I'm talking scrapping or engine swap

Stretched chain for sure. Very common issue on the TSI engines.

Will cost you €725 or thereabouts to have the chain and associated components replaced using an independent garage. Dealer will be more expensive.

I wouldn't be too hopeful of VW making much contribution towards the cost of the repairs.

If that really is the depth of it, then that wouldn't be too bad, I was expecting 2000+ plus for any chain and parts replacement.

Why would this turn my Exhaust light on? and why would it appear directly after a service?

That should be the depth of it. Any garage who is familiar with them should be able to give you a price up front.
Why would this turn my Exhaust light on?

The exhaust light comes on when any fault code which affects emissions is logged.
and why would it appear directly after a service?

    Co-incidence I would say.

I have this engine in a 09 Octavia, it's running perfectly with 87,000 KM on the clock. The car has a full Skoda service history. What can be done (if anything) to prevent this chain stretch occurring?

    Alright, thanks for the insight.

Any symptoms of a stretching chain? My Tsi has started some mild pinking under load that is not fuel brand specific.

    Confirmed! Stretched timing chain.

They're quoting 1200 including tensioner and 2 year warranty.

Can anyone recommend any specialists in Cork for a quote on this?

    Try Autowerks in Midleton.

Incidentally, if an independent garage uses genuine VW parts then they are covered by the same 2 year warranty as if you had paid a dealer to do the work.

What parts are required for a proper repair George? Is it just a chain and tensioner or is it sprockets etc? I suppose labour is a huge chunk of the cost.

    Timing chain
    Tensioner
    Tensioner rail
    Guide rail
    Cam sprocket bolt x2
    Crank pulley bolt
    Crank oil seal
    Timing chain cover gasket
Modified turbo oil feed line (as per a VW TPI to prevent repeat failure of the chain)
Modified oil pump pickup pipe (as above)
    Oil
    Oil filter
Coolant (as water pump has to be removed as part of the job)

    Think that's it :pac:

Holy moley..... I'll just play the waiting game I suppose and in the meantime keep the car well serviced.... It's going really well so far, great power accompanied by surprisingly good fuel economy. Fingers crossed.
