Cycling - HandleBars - Help!!

    Ahoy,

Converting a racing bike with 26mm (at centre) drop bars and want to switch to flat/riser bars. Don't want to buy a new stem but it seems that the old standard flat/riser bars were 25.4mm and the new ones are 31.8mm. Will the 25.4mm handlebars fit in my original stem? If not what to do? Is a new stem required and if so has the socket where the stem meets the bike remained standard over the years i.e. could I fit a stem for a 31.8mm handlebar in the relevant socket of an old racing bike?

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers.

25.4 mm handlebars + spacer cut from a smooth metal can will do the trick. Beer cans are too thin, but tuna or tomato should be good :)

Just make sure to sand/file the edges smooth after cutting. Also, you may need to use 2 layers, depending on the wall thickness.
