Sound missing in videos watched via Quicktime.

I have Quicktime software installed on a four year old Toshiba laptop. I use it to to watch videos that I upload to the laptop from my digital camera. (The laptop came with a Windows video player built in, but for some reason it would never play the videos. A friend of mine added on Quicktime & I've been able to watch/hear my little home movies for years now.)

I just went to watch a few of the videos and the sound is now missing on all them. The videos are playing ok, but there no sound. It's not the laptop, as I can hear You Tube videos ok. Quicktime updates automatically, so I don't think I am running an out of date version of it. The videos themselves wouldn't play if I was, right? The sound settings on Quicktime all look ok.

Any ideas of what is going on?

    Remove QuickTime, use VLC instead.

Thanks. I may try that later, but for now I'd prefer to see if I can fix Quicktime. I think there is something going on with it that just needs tweaking, if anyone can figure out what it may be.

If I do use VLC, will I still be able to watch all the old videos that I already have on the lap top?

To be honest Quicktime is as old as the hills and there's better software out there at the moment (VLC).

VLC is just an all-in-one media player (that is it works with every file), you won't be removing / deleting any of the videos.

See this chart for VLC vs Quicktimes file associations.

Ok thanks. I'm having problems with uploading the videos to You Tube. (I'm doing that so I can hear the sound.) Could the fact that they are in Quicktime format be the issue?

When you say "quicktime format", what exactly is the extension of the files you're wanting to view as they might not be supported (.avi / .mkv / .???). Where did these files originate from (particular camera / recorder). You can find this out by right clicking and going in to properties.

The videos upload to You Tube ok, but it takes for ever. As they are uploading, You Tube says "we do not recognise this file format but we will still try to process your video." It takes about 10 minutes for a 2 minute video to upload.

This could just be your internet speed.

Again, what is the extension of the file? (the three letters after the dot) And how were these recorded? Did you try using VLC?
