Many countries, like Japan and the US, use a mixture of GSM and CDMA.
For example, the largest provider in the US is Verizon, which uses CDMA. No GSM-only phone will be able to work on the Verizon network.

Make sure your Samsung phone is GSM and off you go..

There also may be issues with the 4G bands on the US version - it may not cover all those here in Ireland

There is several s5 models in the US and only one of them fully supports 3G in Ireland let alone 4G. Be very careful which model you get.

    SM-G900M - Fully supports 3G but no 4G
    SM-G900A - Supports 2100mhz 3G and 1800mhz 4g (missing 900mhz 3g/800mhz 4g) Coverage might be poor
    SM-G900T - Supports 2100mhz 3G and 1800mhz 4g (missing 900mhz 3g/800mhz 4g) Coverage might be poor

    The EU model is SM-G900F
