Was in Maynooth looking for Gear Oil

Found the right grade but the spec is slightly different, they said to me in the motor factor at the time that the GL5 exceeds the old GL4 spec; the spec the Jimny wants in it's transmission.

Googling at home seems to give me conflicting info. Some say they're backwards compatible, others say they're not and the additives in GL5 will wear sacrificial brass components in older transmissions faster than designed.

    Any Ideas?

I have a drum of GL4 that I only use in the transfer box of my defender for the same reason.
In the diffs EP- 90- GL5, Im sure that there is no brass in them and GL5 is much easier got
The gearbox takes MTF-94 (expensive stuff)
I have a 99 defender and I know they stopped putting brass components in the transfer boxes but I can't find out for sure when so I have been using Gl4 just to be safe.
Its been changed 7 or 8 times now since I have owned it and no problems so far anyway.

    Hope this helps you.
