New Leap Card

Got a leap card from my job that will do me for the year and was told I'd need to activate it at a shop?!

Anyone know exactly what the story is, can it be done online etc?

Tried https://www.leapcard.ie/en/NavigationPages/CardRegistration.aspx but didn't work so take it that this isn't it.

edit - seems to have worked 2nd time trying, will this card now work!?

Quickest way to be sure is to go into a shop with a Payzone sign and ask them to check the balance. Or slap it into a ticket machine at a Dart station and see if it quotes the balance. Unless your employer has paid for a commuter ticket and it's already loaded on the card, the card may only have a balance of 1c so you may need to add some credit in a shop or a Dart station.

They have already paid. I assume this means I'm okay to use it straight away?

Surely I don't need to worry about having a balsnce if my employer already paid for a yearly ticket

If you've been told to activate it in a shop then go and do it. Find a shop with a Payzone sign and ask them to activate it. If they don't know what you're talking about (a common problem in convenience stores where the staff are poorly trained), just ask them to check the balance, that should do it.

Very slightly off-topic, the auto topup feature they've brought in is great - no more worrying about topups being loaded or not.

When I registered it online it shows that I've a year to use on the type of leap card I've chosen to purchase. So I think I might be okay.

For that one, on the buses, you put it up to the thing on the right, not the reader by the driver, as it will see an empty card.

That's an assumption you're making whereas in your first post you said someone told you it needed to be activated 'in a shop'? Was that an instruction you got in a letter that came with the card or who told you that?

Thread moved from our Travel forum to where it would be better suited.

OP, are you based in Dublin or somewhere else?

Only if it includes a dublin bus ticket. OP hasn't stated which it's for.

OP the card needs to ohysically touch a "live" terminal to load the ticket onto the card. This is standard practice with similar cards such as Oyster.

The live terminals are located in Payzone agents - all you need to do is ask them to do a balance enquiry.

If it's an Irisb Rail or LUAS product then you can use their ticket machines also.

All that the online settings are showing is the ticket associated with the card. It still needs to be physically loaded onto the card itself.
