It's that time of year again :) Anybody got any tips on places to forage for wild blackberries?

I'm located in south county dublin so Wicklow north is close enough too.

Also, any nice recipes anybody would like to recommend?

The first flush of blackberries is almost over at the moment. As to where to find them; any hedgerow will be teeming with them. I collected 14lbs last week for jam. Avoid along busy roads as the fruits can be quite dirty from traffic.

I had about the same got before the rain and went out today and they were very soft since last week. Will there be a second batch so Evelyn Early Polo?

Just stay away from the mushrooms anyway. With that username ;)

Rosehips are quite nice at the moment. Just nibble away at the juicy outside part, and ignore the inner part which is very dry.

Great recipe for blackberries hereunder. Surprisingly good accompaniment to any meat dish. Any woodland walk should yield a decent crop. Good year for them.

There will be a second flush but they tend not to all ripen at once and to be smaller. They are harder to pick because they are at different stages of ripeness.

Out in west Donegal, the Portnoo/Rosbeg area, the blackberries are amazing this year. Anywhere east facing, sheltered from west winds and near a shuck, has the biggest, most plentiful blackberries I have ever seen in the district.

Would anyone know a decent site that points out what berrries are what and what is edible etc? I'm often out and see erries but have no idea what they might be. I know blackberries but that would be about the level of it.

    Thanks

You can make crab apple or rowan jelly now. Rowans are laiden with fruit just now

Elderberries are in season right now. They can be used in the same way as sloe in gin. Steep elderberries and sugar in gin or vodka with a twist of lemon peel. Seal in a large glass jar like a kilner jar and shake once a day until the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar has dissolved leave it for about 3-4 months before drinking it. If you make it now it will be ready for Christmas.
The hedges are laiden with blackberries just now. I'm sure they can be used in vodka and gin also

You can use pretty much anything to flavour vodka ....

Tansy is not native but you do get it near houses sometimes. I do not have a site but you might be better off trying to get seeds and growing some.

    it is fairly widespread

There is a huge second flush of blackberries everywhere at the moment and all good sized fruits. It's many a year since they were this good and this plentiful?
