    Morning all...
Kinda gotten into zelda lately on the n64 that i recently purchased ..and im in the latter stages of the ocarina of time (superb beautiful game) and ive yet to start majoras mask which i also purchased ..

My question to you guys is....is twilight princess better on the wii with the handheld pointer etc or is it just worth getting it on the game cube with a normal.controller...

Im not a huge fan of the wii ..just have it.super mario kart really...

It's great on both and plays in a traditional LoZ manner on both platforms but the GC edition is the original version as , in order to implement the motion controls, the mirrored Link and the world around him, right to left.
In game you won't really notice though!
The price differential is extreme however , and you might be best picking it up for around 15 euro for the Wii and getting it later for the GC when you find an affordable copy somewhere.
Bear in mind the game is great but it is, at its core, a greatest hits of Zelda in a remix, while the series shares a lot with each previous iteration in this titles case it's more obvious, particularly in the boss battles which are lifted wholesale from OoT and others.

I'd agree with Cidey, go with the Wii version purely for the difference in price. I haven't played the later Skyward Sword but I thought Twilight Princess was the weakest of the Zelda titles (still a game worth playing ofc just not up to the highest of Zelda standards imo).

Cheers lads...yea i noticed the substantial price difference alright and i can go buy it today...but as i said im.not a fan of the wii point and zap controls..(resident evil on the wii is just horrible) ..

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

The game is no where near as fond of "point and zap" as Skyward Sword is.
Go for it I say and have a ball with it.
Probably one of the weakest Zelda games but that still makes it a damn sight better than most comparable games elsewhere.

A big advantage of the Wii version, is that it supports Widescreen and 480p.

how come the gamecube version is dearer anyway?

how come the gamecube version is dearer anyway?

It was released in much more limited numbers so is quite rare.

I bought it for a mate at release, he didn't have a Wii.
    He never played it!
I haven't seen him in years and, afaik, it's still sitting in a cupboard or on a shelf.
    I Must Have It!!!

Yea....as i said above the wii version would be found easy enough and cheap too....the gamecube version would be more difficult to find....and judging by varios sites , pricey too

I got a free wii console with mario kart years back and i enjoyed that but overall im not a fan of the wii at all.....

My own ratings of the games would be quite different, and probably a little controversial for some of you!

Best - Majoras Mask and Skyward Sword
Brilliant - LttP, OoT and Windwaker
    Great - Twilight Princess

Skyward Sword, while I'm sure lots of you wouldn't put it so high, for me, was a massive love letter to all the previous games, with so many references and nods to various previous games in the series, that I couldn't help but love it. It was beautiful looking, and gave us what we all wanted to do with the Wiimote from the outset, and adapted those mechanics well into the game and the enemies.

Aside from the Nes games, I have to say honestly, the Legend of Zelda games require no nostalgia whatsoever to be appreciated.
Each and every one of them stands up with the best of today, with a slight allowance for the ever so slightly dates visuals of the N64.
Link to the Past is still an amazing game and looks perfect.
Wind Waker is a brave step, taking the novelty of cel shaded games and taking it beyond a mere pastiche of Saturday morning cartoon and producing something beautiful.
Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess both take the realistic template of how a LoZ game should look from OoT and runs with it, with clever colour palettes.
Majoras Mask is probably the bravest of all, really confounding expectations and rewarding the player, a change in a series criticised for not changing enough.

Don't forget about Wind Waker OP, that came out in between Majoras Mask and Twilight Princess, it is an amazing game.

While we are all at it

    Rankings

    1st: OOT
    2nd: Wind Waker
    3rd Skyward Sword
    4th: Twilight Princess
    5th: Majoras Mask, LTTP

The Handheld games are also worth a look.

They are all brilliant to be fair. I will buy a Wii U just for the next one.

    ok my turn :)

    1. Ocarina
    2. Skyward Sword
    3. twilight princess
    4. majoras mask
    5 Minish cap

I didnt really like the Windwaker i liked the story for it but it just wasnt for me. i dispised the sailing in the fecking thing tbh. but is was good apart from that. The thing i really liked about it tho was link had some badass counter moves with the sword like when you have to press "a" when it flashed up. It seemed like even tho link was a kid, he was a deadly swordsman

    2: Ocarina of Time
    3: Majoras Mask/Wind Waker/Skyward Sword
    4: Twilight Princess

Just keep in mind, Majoras Mask is a very different Zelda game, when considered over the normal Zelda-mechanics.

It looks just gorgeous in HD...even the GC original still holds up amazingly well today in the eye candy dept

Ha I was expecting a bit of abuse for that one, I think I was just a bit young to appreciate it, I grew up playing OOT and it just had more nostalgia for me.

That was a bit deal for people before the game got released, but when it came out people actually loved it. It is a bit different but it worked very well.

It is certainly no Disney game, It is often tied for my favourite LOZ game along with OOT.

    How about no

Also, you people who didn't like LTTP are just wrong, your opinion is wrong :P
Minish Cap was alright, but let's keep the handheld stuff out of this, it's only average compared to the console releases.

I'm a bit like that myself towards games if I'm honest. Majoras Mask though, that's an exception :)

While I did somewhat enjoy Majora's Mask and I do praise it for taking risks, outside of the NES and DS games it is probably my least favourite of the Zelda titles. If there's a rerelease, I'll probably give it another go. It's unusual for me to only play a Zelda title once, but that's all I've played Majora's Mask (I think Spirit tracks is the only other one I've played through once).

I liked the different masks you could wear and it was fun playing as the different "characters" but there were so many niggles for me. I hated the going back to the first day and I hated that it made the dungeons you had finished reset, so to have their effects on the world you had to beat the boss again. One example that this caused frustration: trying to get things like the Gilded Sword. I finally won the Goron Races but then didn't have enough time to actually use the Gold Dust, so back to Day 1 again and having to beat the boss and win the race all over again.

Adding my top 5 zeldas are probably:
    Ocarina of Time
    Link to the Past
    Link's Awakening
    Twilight Princess
    Wind Waker

I have no idea what you're saying as I haven't played it since the 3rd day after christmas like 14 years ago, and even reading that back reminded me of why i didn't like it, so convoluted :P

That, and the Kefai/Anju task are the only ones that really frustrated me with the time limit.

I want Hyrule Warriors though, looks like a nice lightweight take on the series.
Also, I have to pick up Links Awakening DX and Oracle of Ages, both for the Gameboy Color.
Minish Cap is a cracking game btw, well worth playing

I can honestly say, Hyrule Warriors does nothing for me. It looks like Dynasty Warriors reskinned, & very little to do with the established Zelda mechanic. I'll get it eventually no doubt, but it's way way down the list.

I got both Oracle games there cib recently enough (pricey gems). I cleared Seasons, but was punishment enough for me not to go straight into Ages. I'll get to it eventually :o

I see Twilight Princess ain't getting much higher tier love. I guess it depends the moods and phases you are in when playing games. I put so many hours into Twilight Princess that I definitely have a special liking for it. I think the bosses in it are some of the best in the series and parts of it feel really rewarding after the frustration of being temporarily stuck on a puzzle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,552 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Ocarina was my first love Zelda so it'll probably always be my favourite, even though last time I played it, on 3DS, I accidentally made it harder on myself.

Started Majora years ago on the gamecube but was around the time I strated working so never got playing properly. Keep meaning to start but know as soon as I do, that they'll announce the 3DS version. So I have 2 copies of the gamecube disc with it on it and have it on N64 cartridge as well.

Link Between Worlds was excellent and prefer it of LttP.

Completed Wind Waker HD recently for the first time since the GC version and it's great.

And I don't see why Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess get so much hate. I know they're not perfect but a poor Zelda game is still great. And to me they're not poor anyway. Think Twilight suffered from a large empty field while Skyward was kind of linear in parts

(Just don't mention the CD-I games)

The bosses in Twilight Princess were a greatest hits mix of Zelda bosses that came before.
That was one of the problems with it.
The game felt a bit like a homage to its own franchise and possibly the first time another game, Okami, came to be as good as the LoZ franchise.

Well Okami is a great game in its own right. I believe it deserves its spot as a great Zelda game without needing to be compared to Twilight Princess. It's definitely the best non-Zelda Zelda game I've played, followed by Okamiden.

Speaking of, I know it's kinda OT but what other quality Zelda clones are there? Wasn't 3D Dot Game Heroes like a PS3 LttP?

Isn't Pandora's tower supposed to be very Zeldaesque? And I was reading about Shadow man which is in a bundle at the moment and also came out on N64 as a very zeldaesque game too.

Darksiders on the 360 and PS3 is supposed to borrow from Zelda, also there are plenty of 16 bit titles that are peers of the Snes game LttP and are its equal if not superior , Chronotrigger on the Snes and later the DS is essential, as is te Earthbound/Mother series.

Twilight Princess is the only Zelda game I haven't played, saw it for 12euro in CEX and going to get it tomorrow for the wii. Looking forward to it.

I only got into the Zelda series by accident 3 years ago whilst browsing the eshop the videos for the 25th anniversary which featured Robin Williams (RIP) and his daughter caught my eye and decided to download Link's Awakening to see if I'd like the series and ending up falling in love with the series and am a huge fan.

I've played and completed most of the games, my top list is:

    1. Ocarina of Time, absolutely beautiful game, perfect, loved the master quest on the 3ds with the different dungeon layout, mirrored overworld and double damage. Never tire of this game.

    2. Majora's Mask, very close behind OOT, the music in this game alone is unreal (stone tower temple), once you get the hang of the 3 day cycle this game is so enjoyable. Loved the transformation masks and all the side quests.

    3. A Link Between Worlds, loved being able to choose the dungeon order and the hero mode was very challenging, died a lot at the start with the quadruple damage :o, and also made the bosses tougher.

    4. Oracle of Ages / Oracle of Seasons, such great games and really enjoyed playing a linked version.

    5. Link's Awakening, this was higher up the list but think I played it a bit too much recently. Still love this game though.

    6. A Link to the Past

    7. Wind Waker, yet to complete it but around 75% through and loving it!

    8. Minish Cap, really fun game.

    9. Skyward Sword, not a fan of the motion controls and found having to beat the imprsisoned so many times a pain, still a pretty good game and some really enjoyable dungeons and one of the best bosses of all time Koloktos!

    10. Legend of Zelda

    11. PH / ST (would be much higher only for stylus control)

Think that's all the games I've played so far!
