Interesting... It's closer to a club activity than a society one, but there's much more leniency to create completely bull**** societies... which to go for?

Ye, could try for a club and at worst get a society. Clubs have to worry about aload of other stuff like health and safety etc, plus we'd have to have training, and I was thinking it could be a group for bodybuilders, powerlifter, olympic-style lifters and general fitness guys to meet up and share routines, guess we could show rookies how to do compounds or pile on muscle too. Just wondering if the KF would run interference seeing as they're trying to sell a "Bulk up" class which basically tries to do exactly what I just said!

How many ppl dya need anyways (got 3 already anyways haha)?

Well I've always wanted to learn the Olympic lifts and I have some pretty good workouts and a decent level of knowledge for my age I'd be interested in this. I'm a sprinter and cyclist. I always train alone and was hoping to possibly meet some people to train with anyway in nuig

Ye, I think that would be a great thing about having a weights society, a lot of people could find a training partner.

Oh, and exchange tips on how to get cheap food.

Agree with the above...being a newbie to the gym scene I can see it benifting both novices and experienced gym users...it's trending massively with young males so I can't see it being a small soc

Biggest thing you'll face, are you or others qualified to teach. If your not you won't have a club, as insurance won't cover you.

I know anyway I don't want to teach. I just want a training partner a few times a week.

Ye, thats why it would have to be a soc! Tbh I'd prefer a soc, that way we can meet somewhere other than the KF.

Hmm seems strange...snowsports (when I was on board) hadn't any instructors.they gave you the option of getting lessons but left it completly up to yourself

Sure whos gonna check, experience surely counts. If Ronnie Coleman came in to give a class he'd have no "qualifications" either.

I'd be interested lads. I'd say setting it up as a club would be the best option as you'd have easier access to training space and I think they get more cash from the SU than socs do. It's not easy though, I knew a few guys trying to set up an MMA club in the college a few years ago and they found getting insurance tough and couldn't get a slot to train in the KF. So ye might well end up training in Dangan or somewhere. Also proper bars ,plates benches and racks are very pricey. I think though if it was set up and well run then it would easily be the biggest club in the college what with it being the current "in" thing. Keep us posted on developments!

Oh and I forgot to mention but I think clubs day is this week and this is when clubs recruit most of their members so ideally ye would need a stand at this, even if the club wasn't fully set up by then as more members registered equals more money for the club. it's probably a bit late now but you could get in to the KF, kathy I think it is that deals with this sort of thing to see it=f they can sort you out with a stall on clubs day.

If not, there is the alternative, unnoficial version:
setup a group on fb, and just have meets ups whenever?
the only problem with this would be getting the group to only as few non-NUIG/kingfisher NUIG people as possible

My boyfriend was on about starting up a weight soc in nuig! :)

Do you mean set up an unregistered club and just train in the KF gym without telling them? I don't think that would go down too well.

If you wanna put it that way, yeah, I suppose. but how are they to know we're not just a group of friends training together? the problem with making it a club is that, everyone could use kingfisher gym then without paying full price. which is a terrible idea, atleast with a soc it just a group of people who share an interest...

more people read this forum than you think! Theres absolutely no way thst the kf would agree
To a club uding their equipment. Isnt there a weights room in dangan? That might be an option. Ideally you would have your own stuff but that would take years to buy. I know that UL has a weightlifting club you could get in contact with them to see how they do things
