Holiday entitlement problem when on social welfare

    Hi,

I have abit if a problem and I need some advice. I understand when your on the social welfare you are entitled to have a two week holiday within a given year. I have already taken a holiday in March, however my friend is getting married in November of this year and has asked me to be the best man at his wedding. Of course I would love to take on that role but the problem is he is getting married abroad in Singapore which will mean I am going to be away for approx 8 to 10 days. I could manage to fund this trip by selling of a few personal possessions but my main concern is what happens with my social welfare payment If I am to travel abroad for the second time this year? It will obviously mean I will be exceeding my 14 day holiday entitlement if I did go.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I dont want to turn down this best man role because I am on the dole.... Would be really embarrassing for me.

    Thanks

You get 12 days holidays on jobseekers after that you will not receive jsa/jsb. If you exceed the limit then you may have to provide travel documents e.g. flight details and boarding passes. Its also possible that you may be in employment in November and wont have to bother about this

I am really hoping to be in employment should this trip commence. I'm thinking worst case scenario here and wanted to be prepared for the eventuality that come november I'm still on jsa and what i should do.

You wont get payment if you have already taken all your holidays. You will still need to fill out a holiday form.

I was thinking I simply wouldnt get payment for the days I would be away. I could probably deal with that if that were the case. I hope thats the case actually as it would simplify the matter.

That's all that will happen. You just won't be paid for the extra days as you will not have been available for work on those days. Don't stress out over it. There is no law against going to a wedding. Just make sure you have given the appropriate amount of notice to them of your pending travel & explain that you need to take an extra few days. Once you have proof of travel you shouldn't have any problem.

Do as you plan & go in & ask for your own peace of mind & enjoy the wedding.
