Connecting an amp to speakers.

I picked up a 2nd hand amp (yamaha ax396) and I already have a set of studio speakers (m audio bx5a) and I want to connect them. I'll be in Dublin tomorrow and know a few places to ask advice, however I thought I might be able to get a head start here in order to cut down on my walking around and to up my bluffing game.

I only want the set up to play records, I have not got a turn table yet.

I used to have the speakers set up on my zoom studio deck but I mostly only used it for playing cd's through and I liked the speakers. However as all the equipment is a bit dated I was unsure about the possibility of connecting up the Yamaha amp with those speakersl

    Here's a pick of the amp's connectors..

    And here's a pic of a speaker...

See my concern? A 5way from the amp into a xlr or trx connection on the speakers.

Is there a lead out there for me and...well, will it work?

Get yourself a pair of XLR plugs, join pins 1 and 3 together and hook up to speaker. ie. 1+3 to black and 2 to red on amp.

    Do NOT do this. :o

The speakers are powered, designed for line level inputs.
The red and black outputs on the amp are amplified.
If the amp has line outs, use them.

I hang my head in shame.
Fuzzy Clam is correct OP, you'll be amplifying an amplified signal.

OP, Behringer recomend using the TRS inputs for unbal in although you could use XLR if you've already bought the plugs.
You need a set of RCA phono to mono 6.5mm jackplugs (Tip/Sleeve only, no ring).
The only line outs i can see on the amp are tape rec and MD rec. Both are numbered 4. Use either of these.

Indeed I shoulda up dated earlier. I got some advice in Spindizzy records. He pointed out the error of the previous suggestion here. I'm going to take the line from the tape out plugs and get an adaptor to plug that lead onto the trs line in on the speakefs. I won't be doing it now for about 3 weeks or so.

This is exactly what was recommended and thanks for the tech names as it'll make my search much easier. Brilliant, thanks.

Got all this hooked up today and works great but for one slight oversight. I'm taking the speaker feed out from the tape out which means the volume control on the amp is redundant. The speakers have their own volume control so it's not an issue setting the volume to a level I like but changing the volume is a hassle because the volume control on each speaker is at the back. Ah well, will have to think on that one.
