Nokia Lumia 520 : I do not want my phone to check for app updates in the background at all. The start screen has an icon looks like a bag with the number 15 beside it. 15 apps need updates installed?. Can i disable it checking?

And can i put the bluetooth icon on the start screen?

If you don't like that particular (Store) icon , you can remove it from the screen. Tap and hold that icon, then you'll see an option to remove it. As for updates, you cannot stop the phone from checking for updates.

You'll be getting an update for the software on the phone in the next couple of weeks, this will allow you to a) enable or disable Bluetooth quickly with Notification Center b) apps will be automatically updated.

If it's just app updates the OP is talking about (the 15 beside the store icon), they can be turned off in store settings -

Open the store app itself, then click on the three dots, then settings.

You can also stop the phone checking for phone updates in Settings - phone updates.

    Just untick the check box.

automatically download updates is unticked. I was sure update apps automatically is also unticked. But it still checks if there are updates and puts the number in the store icon tile

You can't stop it checking for updates. You can only tell it not to download and install them automatically.

Also, not installing app updates is a terrible idea. What bizarre reasons do you have?

i do not use apps, they want too much info location etc. One i looked at last night was something to with editing photos or making photos funny but it wanted to know phone location. there is no reason for that.

i am not really interested in say face book twitter etc . I do not know why you would say bit is a bizzare reason. If you know of apps that work only on the phone you might like to list them so i can be less bizzare....:D
    :D
I would alsolike to get rid of that stupid bing search thatpops up whentheserch button is touched by accident

First off, most apps do not use location. Second, the phone has a Location settings which you can turn off (Settings > Location) which means no app, or even the phone itself, can use location.

And on Windows Phone 8 (and 8.1 which you have), when an app uses location, a circle appears on the top right of the screen (Settings > Location tells you this also) because even if an app requires location, that does not mean it uses it all the time.

As for the Search button, there isn't anything you can do there.

There is a good reason for that why photo apps request permission as the photos will have geo tagging information in them or if the app takes photos it will require that permission.

I suggest you take off the tinfoil ha
    t :pac:
i suggest you mind your own business until you are paying my phone bill:pac:

Could you suggest an app to send pictures in text

I agree that a lot of apps and phones look for far more information than they need. which is really annoying.

you can use a smart phone like a feature phone and not use all the apps etc. nothing wrong with that.

Your logic is flawed: if you are seeing the store badge telling you to update these apps, then you already have them installed on your phone, and if you already have them installed on your phone, then you've already given them permission to do all of those things. If you don't want to be told about updates to apps that you don't trust, then you should be removing them from your phone entirely, not just ignoring them.

Please help, since my recent update on lumia 520, my camera does not seem to work. When select camera setting I get single shot/multiburst/video option.
But I can't do anything and the screen is blank as if camera lens blocked or something , any ideas to help please ?

They may be apps that come with the phone. They may not be configured yet.

I go through all the default crud and remove it. The app can vary depending what network you are on.

they were pre installed. i deleted as many as i could. not all can be removed. i cannot stop the check for updates i do not install the updates

i dislike the way all the these apps and facebooks -which i do not use] are pre checked to update/share info. I will decide what i share and update. zuckerberg wants people to share everything and he can make money off their photos but he does not want to share anything. "Turn off the cameras" he said when approached by terms and condition

when ms pay my phone bill they can have charge of my phone

Android does the same. A million updates for crud I never use, filling up ram.

This happened me a few times; turn the phone off and on and it should sort it.
If that doesn't do it, while the phone is on press and hold Power and Volume Down button for about 15 seconds and the phone will restart itself; this won't effect your data
