Hi, I was just wondering if anyone would recommend the optional language course. I was thinking of doing either Mandarin, Korean or French but I have no word of Mandarin and Korean but on the sign up sheet it says it is not a grammar class. Do you learn the language well in these classes?

I'd love to know this too. I love French and would love to keep it up, but am also interested in possibly taking up Spanish or another language!

Do you learn the language in theese classes or is it just project work?

I did the beginners Japanese class a couple of years ago, I found it to be the biggest waste of time, loads of group work projects and I didn't feel like I gained anything from it. The classes are also in the evening and go on for almost two hours. Torture. I was doing it for credit so I had to stick with it all year, pretty much everyone who had the option dropped it after the first month.

I'd look into the societies instead, I did classes with the Japanese soc I not only learnt more but it was actually fun there. You should check out the modern languages soc during freshers week, and some of the cultural societies might do classes as well.
