Reapplying for CAO whilst in college

Not sure where to post this, here goes!

Suppose a student has completed 1st year in college, but has failed a module & needs to take the year off to study "off books".

In case this student fails the repeat exam next summer, they plan to make a fresh application for a different course which would commence in September 2015. My question is, if the student passes the college repeat exam next June, will having a new CAO application in the system affect the student's ability to progress on to 2nd year in their original college course?

Thanks in advance for any help, just trying to get our heads around this!
