    Hi all
I will be buying a new car soon and would like opinions on eithe a 1.4 tsi golf or 1.6 tdi or the ford focus. I do roughly 15 thousand km a yr mostly city driving like school runs Monday to Friday & at wk ends longer runs. I love the look of the golf but would appreciate which one would ye would recommend & golf or focus. I drive the opel astra saloon 1.4turbo at the moment but don't like it.
    Thanks in advance

If its brand new then the mk7 Golf outclasses the Focus in pretty much every department apart from price.

What bits of the Astra do you dislike? It must be very new?

From day one I just though it was to light to drive & not enough torque I feel. It drinks petrol like I'd use about €55 to €60 a wk in it. Yeah it's a 131 so I just think I'd be better off changing it now before it loses too much value. It's d elite model. Would you recommend the tsi or tdi in the golf

Its gonna have eye watering depreciation.
One thing though, while the golf and Focus are subjectively nicer than the Astra - they're not massively different. Getting into an equivalently specced a Golf diesel will cost you mental money.

Oh god I know . Don't know what I was thinking buying the astra as always drove a focus & it's way more solid than a astra. Expensive lessons learned . Was looking at the highline golf & there only seems to be €300 in differance between the 1.4 tsi & 1.6 tdi

The 1.2 TSI would be more fair comparison.
I can't see the 1.2 or 1.4 TSI being much better on fuel than the astra. For that reason and for resale I'd go diesel.
The cheapest option is to probably keep the astra and suck up the depreciation and mpg.
No car will be that good on fuel doing city driving (hybrid maybe)

You get a good chunk of that money back the other end though, whereas that won't be the case with the Focus or Astra.

Thanks for that. Would love the golf thou . Was hoping I'd only have to put about 3k with d astra as I'm Vrt & tax excempt . Do you think a 20min motorway run once a wk would be enough to regen the diesel

So would it be wise to buy the diesel

The vrt is tiny on low emission cars anyway which is not a good thing when you have an exemption. Its not like before when you'd save a bucketload on vrt and vat and bank on residuals 2 years later. I can't see that cost to change happening in January or even now (even if you could get the exemption) tbh.

I'd say that'd be grand for the dpf.

I don't think you do enough mileage.

And school runs and low speed city driving are bad for diesel engines.

I've heard good things about that 1.4tsi engine.

The 1.4tsi Golf is a nicer car than the diesel or the Focus. The engine is very good, much better than the Astras and much livelier even though it's only slightly more powerful.

Gearing and weight blunt the Astras a lot.

Thanks guys ever so helpful so think it's going to be 1.4tsi

What about a 1.2 TSi Seat Leon? It's pretty much a Golf underneath except it's a lot cheaper and specs are better value.

    Hi all
Once again can I bother you all. After going about the focus & golf over the last few weeks Iv finally decided on the golf comfort line. Seem to be getting a good deal on it. As you know I've the astra saloon 1.4 turbo elite with 27k km on it so by January it should be 30k. As I'm paying deposit Wednesday my mind is addled about which to go for the 1.2tsi or I.6tdi both 105bhp, a lot of extras with it like 16inch wheels front fog lights parking sensors adapted cruise control multi functional leather steering wheel some kind of lightning beams etc .inly €200 in differance of both , with my own car & Been Vrt & tax exempt I have to give 4k so I won't be going for the highline 1.4 . Any advice welcome on which you'd recommend

As in the diesel is only 200 more to buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭Forever21

Yeah €200 like 4200 for the 1.6tdi & 4000 for 1.2tsi . I'd take it on a Sunday for long spin to regenerate it bit week day it's school & college runs. What do you advice as I've no idea

Resale value on the diesel model would be bigger than €200.

If you're trading in again after 2 years, get the diesel. Even if its harming the dpf it'll be someone else's problem.

That's a great trade in you're getting on the opel.

Never had diesel before that's why I need advice before I pay deposit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭Forever21

Yeah I was surprised with the trade in so I said I'd go for it over the focus. You've made my mind up I'll go & pay deposit tomorrow & I'll take d diesel for long run every sunday. Was delighted even with the boot space in the golf the child's wheelchair won't fold as its a rigid sports chair & fitted in with ease with parcel lid off .
