I'd expect to get up at stupid o'clock to get out in good time before dawn, burst me h*le trying push the boat into the reeds, spend all morning trying to keep other boats coming in too near to me and if I'm lucky I might get a few shots at a few immature scrawny mallard, then go home and regret taking a day off for a whole lotta nothing.. thats how any opening morning I ever ventured out was for me. Enjoy!!

He's dead right that's all that ever happens, a lot of idiots out who won't be seen for dust when the weather turns abit cold, ironically this is when the shooting gets good!
End of October is when the shooting really starts for me, wigeon and divers will be starting to come in!
As above I'll be up at stupid O'Clock boat on the jeep bursting my arse to get into the reeds, if i dont camp on an island might get a few shots if there's no lads near me, then spend hours trying to pick decoys and get out of the reeds! Same every year.
Last season was mixed, few good days on divers and wigeon some ****e days too.

I avoid the main lake and rivers for first day and first weekend as too many idiots about.give it a week and you hardly meet anyone out.Il go for a deer on the morning of the first and do a quiet little splash for a evening flight after.

The only advise I can give you on the Shannon is that unless your familier with the river and its lakes at this time of year, i'd either wait till summer and do my paperwork and get to know the river for next year, or tag along with someone who knows the river well, and learn from them!

The Shannon can be a dangerous place! The outlay of the river can change so much in the winter!;)
