Rear Mech Tuning

    Hi,

Using the barrel adjuster I'm having difficulty getting smooth rear shifting. I can get either smooth upwards shifting or smooth downwards shifting but cannot get both at the same time. Mechanism is Ultegra and the bike is 15 months old and had perfect shifting when new.

Any idea what I need to look at ?

Rear gear cable has been in since new and there is probably about 9000km on it, is this likely a factor ?

Using a chain wear indicator I can fit the 0.75 side (not too easily) but not the 1.0 side. Presume this is not yet the issue.

    Thanks

    It'll be the cable. 100%.

More than likely. It would be my prime suspect. Remove the inner clean it and check for wear at the shifter where the bend is most acute. If not that clean and lube the rear mech in particular ensure the large return spring is not clogged with mud.

install new outer and inner cable/housing etc.......if its still the same its the shifter

...or the derailleur hanger is out of line.

IMO, that's very unlikely. Shifters usually either work or don't work at all. As others have said.. The cable is the most likely culprit.

Nope actually happened to me,rear hanger plum, shift up no bother but wouldnt come down smoothly, done all the above tuned it,new cables etc and still was causing bother, went to a very good mechanic he checked out everything as I did and same problem, went and threw on diff spare shifter and problem went.

And its not a case that they either work or dont, some parts in campag shifters just wear down and are replaceable such as springs etc.

Never heard of that before...what shifters were they?

Shimano, and they have happened to clubmates shimano ultegra ones too.

Im using campag now as parts are easily got and can be replaced alot easier,
Shimano shifters are a nightmare when not working right, time to get news when that happens.

Fair enough, but I still think the OP's problem will be solved by a new inner and outer cable. ;)

Hopefully it is for him ;),but if it persists after doing all the mentioned above he should try swap a shifter on it and check again.

Thanks lad, will keep all the advice in mind but replace the cable first and see how it is then.

Is cable internally routed? While it looks nicer it can be tricky to get set up as good a similar externally routed system.

I made my bike ugly for sake of performance

Change cables is a good start anyhow

Yep, internal routing, changed the cable to the front mech a few months ago and it wasn't too difficult so hopefully read mech will be similar.
