She's just gonna fill it up with €100 notes, ain't she?

Fair play to her. There's a reason though that we don't have any 50-metre pools in Ireland, and that's because they're horrendously expensive to maintain, and only really of interest to swimming enthusiasts. Most people go the to pool to have a splash around or play with the kids, so aren't going to be specifically attracted to a 50m pool.

Hopefully she's gotten some good advice on board on how to make it sustainable, maybe she should ask the sports councils from both countries for a yearly grant to assist in the running costs.

She won 33 million and plans on spending 8 million to build an Olympic pool to help find an Olympic swimming champion. Shes run into planning problems so far but fair deuce to her for being so keen to give back, including plans to build 140 homes at affordable prices for families.

Reminds me of the guy who used his lotto winnings to build the titanic restaurant in Cobh. He did a great job I only went once but was impressed but it all ended in tears.

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/lotto-dream-dies-as-titanic-restaurant-is-sunk-25980628.html

Now he had a lot less money then the latest winner and while its all very commendable I somehow cant see it working out. It wouldn't be on the same scale as the National Aquatic Centre but that ended up costing nearly twice its budget coming in at nearly 120 million.

How do ye think its going to go?

    Um. Swimmingly well?

Maybe I'm mistaken but as far as I know there are at least 4 50mtr pools in Ireland.
The N.A.C, DCU and university of Limerick along with a private members club somewhere?

You're right. There you go. Maybe I was listening to the barstool whingers at some point going on about how Ireland doesn't have any full-length pools.

Yeah there's a few. Not DCU but UCD and West Wood in Clontarf I think you mean.

If you filled it with single malt scotch and then took a swim in it I wonder would that get you drunk.

Fantastic to think that she'd give back so much (already given away 17 million according to that link) but is she not aware that we already have more than one 50-metre pool?

The facilities in UL are already very good. I'm not sure that any dearth of swimming medals is down to the lack of 50-metre pools. I'd say the problems are far more basic.

Dont know if NI already has one, but one in Strabane then will make accesabilty easier then for people living on the Northen half of the Ireland, would certainly visit it my self if it was built.

And sure, it wouldn't have to be on the scale of the NAC, but would still be very interesting to see and visit.

is she going to staff it/maintain it for the future! I can see the local council doing epic facepalms. Of course they are going to try and tie this white elephant up in planning and paperwork...I would too.

All this to find one or two olympic swimmers... maybe! ... screw the olympics. Just give it to local initiatives for everyone (which she might be doing anyway).

Stick to the property game missus...

No you are correct, it's 'dues' not 'deuce' which is a tennis score or slang for the number 2 in playing cards.

    Great idea.

Best thing I've read on Boards in along time.

It wont be long before there's a headline of "Lotto winner goes bankrupt: 50m pool taken over by NAMA"

Is she going to pay for the ongoing maintenance and running costs of it as well? As is often the case with large projects, these costs can dwarf the initial building costs over their life time.

Yep. Alcohol is absorbed through the skin, even from things like alcoholic hand rubs. If you swam in it for long enough, you might just die.

I've always said deuce and will continue to do. I would presume it comes from tennis as being a fair point ....

She hadn't a penny to her name hit the jackpot and is now trying to help people that were in her situation only a few months ago

    give her a break

only 4 long course pools in ireland (50m), 3 of which are olympic standard (50m x 25m)

the one in west wood isnt wide enough I believe (only 6 lanes, needs 10)

It's her money and she is absolutely entitled to do as she wishes, but surely that kind of money could be used for better purposes if she really wanted to make a difference?

A range of community halls, playgrounds, green areas...
