As the thread name suggests I have been looking to register myself for VAT. I have been doing small little jobs here and there but would now like to register for vat as some clients are now looking for VAT receipts off me and I can't provide them as of now.

Whats the best way to go about this? I imagine some other photographers here have been in similar situations. Do I just need to fill in a form or is it more complicated than that?

You don't need to be registered for vat if your earning less than 38k a year, you do need to be registered for income tax though. Just tell them your not registered and don't add vat to jobs.

I do have a regular 9-5 too so does the 38k only mean for the photography or all my income?

An individual who "supplies services" and who's annual turnover exceeds €37,500 must register for VAT. This threshold does not include PAYE income.

Also an individual is obliged to register for income tax if they have a non-paye source of income where (a) the gross amount exceeds €50K per annum or (b) the net profit exceeds €3174 per annum.

You can register for either/both these taxheads by completing a TR1 form, which can be downloaded from the Revenue website, www.revenue.ie

As already said, you don't have to charge them vat if you give them an invoice. They can't claim back vat that you aren't charging them in the first place.
