Car will not start now

Friend was driving an 2006 fiesta 1.4tdci when she heard a noise and then the car just stopped and would not start again.

Half of the fan belt was wrapped around the bottom pulley.
We cut the remaining part of the belt and also removed the piece from the pulley,

Car will crank over but will not start.

    Any suggestions

    thanks

Not familiar with said car,was the bottom pulley the water pump, and is timing belt running water pump, google it now...

Seeing as that's an electric driven fan I'm guessing that was the timing belt... Don't try to start the car! Though it's probably too late... Mechanic! Not a job to do yourself as the timing will be out and you need tensing equipment for the belt.

it was the alternator belt that half of it just snapped and wrapped around the bottom pulley, half of the belt was still intact,
we put spanner on pulley nut and it will still turn ok and doesnt lock solid

What kind of noise, Screech, bang? any lead up? loss of power?

Don't remove parts then expect to start normally?

From a very limited set of info I shouldn't guess, but as I did something similar a long time ago,,, MAYBE, it could be overheating caused by pump or fan failure followed by loss of compression when she warped the head? Not good, better luck when you investigate further.

screeching like belt caught i think, car stopped right away so no overheating etc

should at least start up without alt belt though

If fan belt was wrapped around the bottom pulley, then it most likely has went in under cam belt and shifted it. Your valve timing will then be wrong and most likely have caused engine damage.

Not familiar with this set up but would explain sudden fail. No way Fan belt or Alternator belt would cause such sudden fail. Loss of cooling or loss of electric would be more gradual.

The alternator belt will have broken the crankshaft sensor and/or wiring when it wrapped around the pulley. Should be an easy enough fix. Seen it a few times on those engines.

Like George said check the crankshaft sensor/wiring,Also check the magnetic ring that the crankshaft sensor reads....the aux belt could have damaged this ring when it rapped around it.

so a repair to it or replacement could fix it george

my friend has a 04 1.3 petrol fiesta here, maybe could swap sensor over to see if its the problem that if its the same

I have a similar problem, anyone know if the Camshaft sensor can be removed without taking of bottom pulley wheel on a 1.4 diesel

I usually remove the crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover to remove the crankshaft sensor.

    The attached diagram may help..:)

OP....you can see the magnetic ring (2) i was talking about in this diagram..;)

ok no damage on timing belt cover so we think all is ok there, we also replaced the crankshaft sensor and also fitted a plug in case the old one was damaged also but it will crank over but not start up,made no difference at all:(

Its possible the ring that the sensor gets its pickup from is broken its in behind the timing cover.

It doesnt take much to damage them if you have access to diagnostic equipment you could check for rpm on cranking.

Also try bleeding the fuel system if it has been sitting up for a while diesel could have leaked back to the tank over time.

oh didnt know that, we just changed the 3 wire plug and crankshaft sensor,
is the ring at the bottom ?
if the ring is broken what then?

    thanks

The ring is part of the crank pulley that the timing belt runs on in behind the timing cover.

You will need to strip the timing belt off to replace it.
Ive seen a couple of magnetic rings detaching from the pulley.

It may not be that try bleeding the fuel system first before you do anything else.

Have a look at my previous post (14) and you will see the ring (magnetic track) and to answer your questions.....

is the ring at the bottom ? it is located behind the crankshaft pulley.
if the ring is broken what then? Order a new ring/track from ford and fit it.

What fault codes were been logged when you got it diagnosed by your mechanic..?
Are you getting 250-300 Rpms when cranking..?

As above if crank signal is missing, there will be no rpm signal logged in live data on cranking. I would check cam timing once you have checked reluctor ring for security

ok timing belt is ok but left into a garage in longford and mechanic says he tried to line it up, must be timing or something, but it jammed or locked and says piston damage but car was cranking over perfect and trying to start, no funny or uneven noises so thought if piston damage it wouldnt be like this

So looks like when the fan belt wrapped around the pulley, your timing belt either snapped or skipped a few teeth. Ouch.

but would she crank over perfectly if this happened

Damage was already done once the valves were bent there is no restriction.
