Cheap "run around" car

    Hi there,
I am not really into cars and currently drive an old 1998 Nissan Micra which will have to be changed soon. I am looking for advice on what I should buy. It is going to be used to get to and from work (approx. a 45 minute drive each way every day in heavy traffic). Also, it will be used as a secondary family car. I am not looking for a new car. I suppose my main priority would be cost/fuel efficiency/tax etc. and also safety. The 1998 micra is very cheap to run but I looked up the crash tests and it is so poor safety wise. I will have about 4k to spend, maybe a little more but not much more, and don't mind buying an older car once it is reliable.
Any advice would be most welcome!
    Thanks.
