€4 for an hour and 4 minutes in City Square car park. I now remember why I normally avoid that place like the plague. Is there any cheaper car park around the centre of the town for an hour or two? What are they ones on the quay charging? Ive never been in any of them. The new one on the road up to the city square entrance...is the only way to pay there via a debit/credit card?

The one behind the bus station is €5 flat fee for the day. Not sure about the rest

the one across from the gpo is the cheapest i think. 1.80 an hhour, but if your only gonna be a certain amount of time you could pay 50 cents for 10 mins or 20 cents for 5 mins

The clock tower is 2 eur an hour but charge in half hour blocks so at least you don't get charged the full hour if you're slightly over the first hour.
I think the new car park right across from the entrance to city square car park charges by 15 minutes so could work out cheaper too. You have to pay for that one with a debit/credit card though.

The one beside Downes' pub is €5 on exit.

Merchants Quay is only €5 not €5.50 unless it went up since I last used it.

€1 an hour, if you dont need an hour you can just put in a few cents for less time.

Is Miller's Marsh still circa €3.50 for the day?

A bit out of the way but that's decent value, if it is.

Out of the way? It's a 5 minute stroll to town from there.

For City Square €1.90 for the hour, and if it's for over an hour to two hours than it's €4. So if you're over a minute past an hour, you're charged as if you're there for a full two hours. There pricing is set in different blocks, it's not a per min charge.

The new park just before it works out cheaper and is €0.45 per 15 minutes. So it's 10c cheaper if you're there for an hour but if you're there for say 1hr 5mins than it would be €2.25 so good bit cheaper than City Square. If you're there for a full 24hrs, it's €16. Between 5pm - 9am it's €6 (think it's flat rate). But you must pay by card in this car park - you're card is read on the way in and on the way out.

While it's convenient, I fail to see why folks continue to use the car park in City Square . It is way overpriced compared to far, far bigger & better
shopping centres around the country. Vote with your wheels...... park elsewhere - anywhere else! That's the only chance you have to make them alter their prices.

did you not see the price on your way in? everyone knows its expensive for a couple of hours in city square car park, park in other ones, far cheaper, 3.60 for day in Millers marsh or 1 per hour in public ones such as millers marsh and bolton street. if you are too lazy to walk less 2-3 minutes from bolton street or 5 from millers marsh, you will pay more.

Was just talking about this in work the other day. Parking charges in town dont help the business's at all. I know when im in town, im always watching the clock to make sure im out before the next hour is up. Doesnt really entice people to hang around for lunch/coffee/browse around.

I parked there once a few years back thinking it would cost the same as say market cross in Kilkenny or any other place, counldn't get over the charge when exiting.

Haven't parked in the place since, between it being overpriced and finding alot of the parking spaces are tight I have to say I don't know why anybody would park in the place

By right one part of the quays should be free at night to park in, if you look at Kilkenny Dunnes store's carpark right in the middle of the city is free after 8pm. This means you can head in for a nice meal etc and park for free, seriously handy and nice and central.

I always use the Bolton St. car park as I would much rather give my money to the City/County Council than to a random car park operator.

Plus it’s a lovely short stroll up through the beautiful Viking Triangle into the city centre.

Council parking spots are all free. You can park in the heart of the city without being charged - there is a good size car park at the back of Supermacs.

Hopefully when the council open the waterside car park they put a nominal charge on parking there, the more spaces they provide and the cheaper the more pressure it puts on other operators to reduce their charges.

Obviously there's a cost involved in setting up the car park put I hope they have the sense to not try and recoup it through ticket prices.

Dundrum is cheaper than City Square!
The council should have made it a condition of planning approval that the car park prices were in some way regulated, since a shopping centre is a quasi- monopoly situation. Trouble is the City manager seems to be vehemently anti - car.
If you go shopping in Waterford City centre, lugging your purchases back through the wind and rain to Millers Marsh is not very appealing. Its actually less hassle to drive directly to, say Kilkenny's MacDonagh Junction, and park for half the price, and there is not an obstacle course of speed humps, traffic lights and one way systems to navigate to get there! I'm not saying you shouldn't shop locally (You should if you can) but just that human nature being what it is, what people say you should do, and what they actually do are two different things!

I'm fairly certain that the city manager wasn't around when city square was built. The council car parks are often cheaper than the private car parks and are free after 6pm. Private companies can charge what they like and its up to the consumer to shop around.

In my case I had something heavy to pick up and City Square was the closest to it so I used there. It had been years since I used it and I won't be using it again. I normally avoid the centre of the town because of the price of parking and the hassle of finding a space when I have the car so I'll take the bike usually or stick to Ardkeen.

i never have any hassle finding a space and i drive into town with the kids in tow every weekend. €1ph or 3 something for the day i find very reasonable. parking and small charges like these are a small price to pay i think for supporting our city centre, of course, some prefer to moan about everything parking charges, lack of shops, queues in shops, light traffic yet they wont even support their own city centre shops, pubs, restaurants, and complain when shops close.

If you avoid the city centre normally, what do you care about various parking charges, doesnt affect you because you dont go in there, normally.

I said I take the bike into the city centre if I have to go in, I normally avoid it with the car. I need to go and drop something heavy back in with the car next week so I was looking for somewhere cheap in the city centre for an hour or two for when I go doing a few other things aswell while Im in the town. I don't want to have be checking the time constantly to make sure Im not going to be charged and extra €2 if Im over by a minute or two. Has that cleared a few things up for you?

Well by shopping around and being price aware you will see there are numerous car parks where you wont have to keep checking your watch.

never mind parking fees, but jesus still charging to use the toilets in a modern shopping centre (City Square) really is taking the p*ss! Now before anyone says I could have gone somewhere else it was for my 4 year old son so it was a rushed moment!

Seriously though, Waterford is the only place where I've seen this charging to use the toilets in a shopping centre. And to top it off I had a great laugh at the bronze plate saying that these new toilet facilities were opened by none other than the mighty Brenda O'Donoghue of RTE 2FM fame...how much did that cost...and seriously, what sort of hopeless 'celebrity' turns up to open a new toilet facility...pathetically funny on so many levels.

Fairly common but it appears to be a generation thing - newer places don't but older places do (St Stephens Green - prime location, charged to use the loo). Wait a few minutes in City Square and you will get in for free anyway.

Brenda and Gerry would have been big enough names, it's just marketing / publicity. No big deal really and the cost of the plaque is their own choice that cost very little and hasn't cost you anything (usually that remark is associated with tax payers money).
