Trying to find a straight answer on the internet to this question can be somewhat confusing, maybe one of the seo boffins here might be able to help answer the question.

when using google webmaster tools i have my site in there with the www and without the www. so its in there twice with the prefered site name being without the www.

Although google has indexed my site using both domain names and my prefered chosen in webmaster tools is without www. should i have both in there in webmaster tools or should i take out the one with www.?

And just to add, the domain with the www has a redirect where without the www it dont but i believe this is something got to do with the hosting company that im with.

Im just a bit concerned that it might be hindering the sites seo quality?

    Any thoughts

    Thanks in advance.

If I was you I would go without the www, It doesn't really matter, as long as you just pick one.

Not picking a preferred domain reduces the power of your backlinks because if you have a PR7 link pointing to www and a PR6 pointing to the domain w/o www the power of these links is halved..

SEO-wise there is very little difference except for site performance matters on sites with many links to static content either at present or if your site will expand in the future. If you are serving a lot of content like images, css, js, etc. from a static domain eg. images.mysite.com and using cookies on a naked domain eg. mysite.com, then the cookie will apply itself across all the subdomains slowing loading down due to number of requests per domain issues. If you just use the cookie on a www domain it only applies itself to that subdomain: http://www.yes-www.org/why-use-www/
