I finished college in May and signed on for JSA, mainly to be able to get an internship relevant to my degree through jobbridge. I'm at the minimum of 3 months now so I applied for a few and got offered one. I really want to take it, but it's in a different county and €150 a week isn't exactly great for rent, bills, food etc.

Are you renting independently from your family? Are you on the housing list?

You need to be doing one or the other, or sometimes both to be able to avail of rent allowance.

You need to be on the housing list and renting privately from someone who isn't family. Always both of those.

It's either on the housing list or renting privately for st least 6 months and been in a position (not on Sw in other words) to pay the rent when you moved in.

Not that it matters in the case of the OP, but you only have to be on the housing list if you have been renting privately for less than six months prior to your application for rent supplement.

You can rent from a family member if they can prove that they have rented immediately before you to a non family member for the same rent. You also have to prove that it is a legitimate tenancy agreement, but it is possible to do it.

You cannot get Rent Supplement to help you pay rent to your parent if you are living in the family home. If your parent owns a second property, you will generally not get Rent Supplement to rent this property from them unless it is a bona fide tenancy and you are assessed as having a housing need. Your parent must also be able to prove that they have a history of renting this property.

The department of social protection would strongly disagree.

    See more here OP

Lol I didn't say you could get Rent Supplement to help you pay rent to your parent if you are living in the family home. I said Not that it matters in the case of the OP, but you only have to be on the housing list if you have been renting privately for less than six months prior to your application for rent supplement.

Renting privately does not mean in the family home.

I also said You can rent from a family member if they can prove that they have rented immediately before you to a non family member for the same rent. You also have to prove that it is a legitimate tenancy agreement, but it is possible to do it.

The department of social protection wouldn't strongly disagree considering that they set the rules.

Anyway, considering that I rent a property to my sister, who was unemployed for almost a year in 2012 I'm speaking from experience, as she had no problem receiving rent allowance once we proved that it was a legitimate tenancy.

I did point out that my post didn't apply to the OP, as they live at home. I was merely clarifying things for your good self as you gave misleading information by your claim that ''You need to be on the housing list and renting privately from someone who isn't family. Always both of those.'' It's not always both of those! Now you know.

Apologies I completely misread your post.

Once again just to be clear. To get rent supplement you must be on the housing list
    OR
Renting for 6 months ad I said above.
