    Hi all,
looking for advice on options available as a 'side-step' from my 2001 e39 530d. Its given me many many years of great service but i think its time to change. tax is killing me so I'm looking for alternatives from 2008 onwards. Key elements I'm thinking of are:
Ive a family with 2 small kids, might be another baby in the next year or so.
    I've a budget of around 10k
    spec would be:
manual, leather, mfsw… pref a s-line, sport etc
open to an estate and opinions on what I could get for my money.
    Thanks a million

Ideally something like a Skoda Superb but you will struggle to get a decent current shape one for €10k. The problem is that the cheaper it costs to tax the more it will cost to buy.

    Alternative to a 530d is a Jag XF, Audi A6 3.0, Mercedes E Class.

Superb is an alternative to an Avensis, Mondeo, Passat :-P

OP ain't going to buy a 2008 530d or XF for €10k though. €10k will not even get you into a 08 Superb.

Double your budget you might get something that fits your criteria.

would you consider an E60 520d one before the the dodgy 2L timing chain one in 2008? Was going to say how about a 525, but even they are 1080 for the year, could be a middle ground, but would it be worth the hassle to change for E414 a year?

apologies, I need to clarify… its the tax on the 3lt thats killing me. I don't mind at all going down to a 520d.
    Thanks for replies so far

Looks clean, very low mileage for the year, price is on the high side imo though given it's now approaching 8 years old. No idea if that is the going rate though.

Op, while tax might be killing you, 10k buys a lot of tax.
Not to mention, you've a solidly reliable car, that's good spec and a lovely place to be in. A 2008 car is 6 years old now and might not be riddled with problems. While the cheaper tax is great, the depreciation isn't and let's face it, sometimes it's better the devil you know.

point well made and something I've toyed with. current car is hitting 180k miles and is having a lot of 'niggly' issues. still original turbo and gets serviced twice a year (approx every 10k), but I'm thinking that is a major issue crops up like turbo etc… the cost of fixing may be more than the value of the car on the market. ill then be left with a lump of a car with little if any resale value and in need of a car.

I think this is a bit of a fallacy.

You have a reliable car you know, why not spend €2000 to fix the niggly issues and lets say the delta in tax is €1000 a year so for €5000 you get another say three years motoring in a great car.

The other thing is motor tax could be raised in the budget on all the post 08 cars and or pre 08 ones.

I wouldnt be surprised to see no rise in motor tax or if there is, then only for the emissions based cars...

You would wonder if they would make more money at this stage by simply lowering the outrageously high rates, say bring the 3L down to E1190 and the 3L+ down to E1390. You would expect them to be exported less, less tax avoidance, more time on the road taxed and if people were driving them more, more on fuel...

    Alternative to 530d?
    535d!

    Alternative to E39 530D?
A sad truth, but the 520D is right up there.

In theory yes, in reality no. Modern engines are great on paper, but in the real world they do no more mpg than cars did 10 years ago. The only real differences is that 10 years ago the quote 'combined' mpg figure was usually achievable in mixed driving, nowadays if you even manage the 'urban' figure on the motorway it's an achievement.

I have to agree with the others, the E39 is quite simply a fantastic car - unless it suffers from a major failure and it really does become uneconomical to repair, I'd hold onto it. €10k buys an awful lot of tax and there is no comparison between an E39 and cars from the class below like the Superb, Mondeo etc. There's nothing wrong with either a Mondeo or a Superb, as cars from that class go both are as good as it gets, but they are in no way comparable to an E39 5 series - probably the best 5 series BMW ever made (certainly it's a lot more reliable than some of the newer BMWs).

The 520d in the second video must be chipped. Official 0-100 time is 8.1 seconds.

A 2.4 Diesel Alfa 159 Ti would be in around your budget (If there were any for sale in Ireland). Not as fast as a 530d but lower tax and in around your budget

It has to be alright. I don't remember the needle climbing like that when I was driving it. A 530d is a good bit quicker, more than that video makes out.

lol at the video though, duel between a mapped 520d and M5.

Remapped diesels are good though, would love to try out a Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI, they make 160bhp standard weight under 1150kg and a simple remap takes them to over 200bhp.

Under 7 secs to 60 and under 15 secs to 100, would roast the 520d in the video and probably a 530d too.

    My next car I'd say.

The video is between a 520d and 530d though, not M5.
Which model Ibiza? Older one with the 1.9 TDI? I doubt you'd get 200bhp out of the 1.9.
