I would really like a career in marketing/public relations when I finish college and I have read that the jobs that are in demand and pay good salaries are business/I.T jobs. I have a strong interest in perhaps working in digital/social media marketing. I would like to explore the public relations sector too. If anyone could tell me if there's good employment/money to be made in marketing&pr, I would really appreciate it :)

The different recruitment agencies publish salary surveys, here's a good one, flick to page 32

There are a lot of digital marketing roles out there that do pay well but you have to read the job description carefully because it could end up being a cold - calling/commission based gig. Companies will use fancy terms such as "Business Marketing Development Graduate" but you will be doing tedious work that falls short from expectations. My advice would be to look at the company name when applying. Places like Paypal would pay very well for a Marketing Graduate or Paddy Power who rely on their promotions during sport events

The thing about marketing is anyone can do a college course in it, its very easy to get into, if you are good at rambling you can get a very good grade in it. The tough part is out in the workforce. Only the very elite marketing graduates probably 10% walk out with a third level marketing specialisation qualification and get a paid marketing job not admin not sales but a marketing job, most are forced particularly outside of Dublin into taking a job under the disgraceful JobBridge scheme for instance I saw today Supermacs in Galway advertising a Digital Marketing Internship position, how can they not afford to pay someone?

I have been working in digital marketing for 6 years now and am only now starting to make above industry salary with a Degree and Masters in Dublin. But I love my job, you do really need to love it, if you have technical acumen do IT, but make sure that you aren't sacrificing something you love because of the job prospects I came out of college at the start of the recession and I don't regret going into it, remember you have to spend most of your waking hours every day 5 days a week doing a job, make sure its something you enjoy!
