 Just noticed that Amazon.com have added this automatic charge to their sales at checkout.
I presume its to cover customs charges. ? Does anyone feel its a bit rich - some low priced items should not attract any charge and we don't have the option to use USPS which often escapes the attention of customs. ?

the lower limit for VAT is €22 (which includes shipping). Do you regularly buy items from amazon.com that would be less than this? I dont think this is quite as big a problem as you think. This is the way things are going. Even ebay do the same thing for items shipped from the states to europe. You may as well get used to it.

Just done a quick check and it only adds this charge if the order total is above the €22 limit. So you now have no choice but to pay the import duty and VAT. on the plus side they dont seem to charge the handling fee that couriers and an post charge which can be up to €15 on its own. So some good and some bad. It looks like the days of cheap stuff from the states with no vat paid are over. It was good while it lasted.

    Thanks.
I normally buy things like sawblades ( I have an American saw ) which come in at $40 or so. The established shops tend to use couriers and using somebody like www.shipito.com takes up to three weeks. You really can't win, although I have to say Amazon are usually the best on price.

with the ever increasing detection rate by customs, having the chance to avoid the €6-€15 admin fees is only a good thing imo.

plus you know it is not going to be held up in customs and you know exactly how much the charges are in advance.
