PC upgrade

    Hi all,

I've been using the same PC for 7 years now. There's been a few upgrades along the way, like an nVidia GTX 460 1gig. But the CPU and MB has remained the same.

    CPU: Core2Duo e4600
    MB: Abit AB9 Pro

It's run really well, probably the best machine I have ever owned and she continues to run well and gives any game I've put into her a good run for its money. I, in fact find it remarkable that it does, TBH. I have to make the odd tweak her and there in some games, but nothing major.

But, lately, I've been getting the urge to get a new machine. I'd like to just be able to order one, as I'm too ropey at trying to build my own. I originally bought the machine above on Komplett in 2007 and could pick an choose some elements of it, but it seems you can't do that any more on that site.

However, I see on Komplett that they have this PC for sale:

Does anyone think that this is a good machine? Would it be an upgrade worth the money. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I haven't even contemplated a PC upgrade in quite a while and frankly, I haven't a clue at the moment.

It'll be used mainly for entertainment, games, watching video, internet and some multimedia work (like cutting video and Photoshop).

No, that's a not a good machine for the money. Your old GTX460 is faster than that card in that machine. Is €1000 your budget? That's a strong budget that would build you a very nice machine. Having said that if you've survived this long on an old E4600, then you can easily build a machine 3 times as powerful for far less than that. With that sort of money, you're best off just selling the current machine as a working PC and going with an all new build.

The 460 is faster than a 750? There's another thing I didn't know. Guess you can't trust numerical order so...:D

My budget would be around €1,000 to €1,500, if I push it. But, I'm so out of touch these days re: PC's and components etc.

    I feel like a numpty.

The GTX750 is a fairly low end card. It's a great performer for the money, and it offers around GTX460 performance while using only a fraction of the power - it's from a totally different class of card though, the equivalent of your GTX460 would be the GTX760, which is a nice card.

On your budget, I'd be looking at a 4690K, Z97 motherboard, 8GB ram, 650W+ PSU, 250GB SSD R9 290X or possibly just R9 290 - but that'll still cost about a grand, but I do honestly think in your case anything more than that won't show you much gain.

There are ways to spend it if you're determined - a 512GB SSD is one, new 1440p monitor is another...there are worse ways to spend money if you get a lot of use out of your PC.

What's the hardware in your current PC? Full specs? Because with a core like a Socket 775 motherboard and an E4600 CPU, the machine in its entirety wouldn't be worth much - could be better off selling it for parts (and possibly re-using a few bits, like your hard drive....well actually, that's about it, nothing else would be compatible really).

    Intel C2D E4600 2.67GHz CPU
    4 gig Corsair PC5300 RAM
    GTX460 GPU
    Soundblaster 4.1 digital soundcard
    Abit AB9 Pro motherboard

encased in a Gigabyte Triton GZ-XX1CA-SNB tower and I'm still running XP on it.

TBH, though, I don't think I sell it. Might just move to the kitchen. It's still a decent enough machine.

Just looking for possible upgrade possibilities, as after 7 years, she showing her age now.

Frankly, I surprised that you cannot "build your own" on Komplett any more. You used to be able to swap out components. Now they just seem to have a "built is what you get" style.

They were bought by paradigit (i think) a good while back. Lots changed, they don't have any warehouse/pick up point in Ireland any more.

Have a look at pc specialist website in the UK, they have decent options like the way Komplett used to, drop down lists for all the components if you are set on pre-built. I think overclockers.co.uk also do something similar

But as I was looking on Internet I found this komplett and prices are mad cheaper comparing to pc world. I'm really wondering how come? Ar the parts genuine? Good quality? Is it a scamish thing? Please enlight me up a bit :(

Komplett used to be great. I built and bought may last PC there and it's done me for 7 years, with a few tweeks.

But, it seems that they'd been bought out, so I haven't a clue what their like now.

Elara are ok in my experience, but I've only ever bought small things from them.
