My windows 8 pc came with McAfee installed and the subscription is nearly up. I have downloaded Malwarebytes and wondered if this plus Windows Defender would be sufficient. I don't really want to pay 50 euros for McAfee.

Unfortunately not. Windows Defender in Windows 8 is a renamed version of Microsoft Security Essentials which has consistently received poor scores in recent years.

However, I wouldn't advise you to renew McAfee either, it's one of the heaviest anti-virus programs out there. Avast Free should do you fine.
