BESS vs Econ&Maths

Ok so I did my leaving cert this year and I didn't get my first choice which was Economics and Maths (I did a lot worse than expected) but i did get BESS(Third choice). I'm hoping to break into investment banking into the future so my question is, would the pure Economics degree that I get with BESS be good enough to land me a spot in a top bank, or would it be easier with Maths and Economics (in which case id be repeating). I do like both economics and maths, and I have no problem repeating in all fairness. I've been mulling over this for a while without coming to any conclusion, so some help would be appreciated!

Depends what you want to do in an IB. Obviously, having maths would be almost essential for some quant role. That said, Econ modules like Econometrics and Quant Methods are pretty rigourous. For other divisions, all that really matters is you get a First. A handful of people every year get into Bulge Bracket banks from BESS. Therefore, I'd advise you do BESS, join SMF and Investors, get some position on a society committee, and maintain a good "GPA"!

One more thing: BESS allows you to concentrate in Economics a year earlier than TSM. Assuming you want to do the "purest" modules available to you, you'll take Econ Thory and Quant Methods in fourth year. Those two have three specific prerequisites in third year meaning TSMs have no choices if they want to take them; as part of BESS, you could satisfy those, and still take Money and Banking and Investment Analysis (for your own interest; I don't think banks would care that much as they'd ship you off for an MBA if they wanted to keep you after three years)!

I personally know several BESS people who have gotten into IB with top tier banks like Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Rothschild. TCD is very good for it, join the SMF and Investors soc, the amount of opportunities you will get is amazing. Just keep focused on it, and get all the experience you can.
