Travel Insurance for Volcanic Ash Cloud?

    Hi guys,

Have been thinking of going away for a break possibly in September / October, however have nothing planned or booked as of yet.

With all this talk however of a possible eruption from Bardarbunga in Iceland, I would like to take out a travel insurance policy to cover all eventualities.

However, I'm not even sure if Irish travel insurers would even cover this now after last time?

And even if they did, would it be too late now to take out a policy given that there are already rumblings that there may be a repeat of 2010?

Or would you be covered if you took out the policy just so long as it was before it actually erupted?

Does anyone know of any travel insurers which would actually provide cover for this sort of event?

Sorry for all the questions, new to all of this..

I have an annual multi trip policy with getcover.ie. There was an option to add volcanic ash cover. I didn't!

You need to read the Ts & Cs of any policy that you're considering. No two policies are the same, there are exclusions and restrictions in all of them. In general, the cheaper the policy, the less they will cover.

    Hi All

I'd paid out for platinum level cover for a trip I'm taking to the States on Saturday- assumed that going that bit further with the cover would leave me safe for this type of thing.

I've just confirmed with the provider that they don't cover ash cloud disruption- I can get a refund from them but before I do that I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a provider that definitely covers for ash cloud disruption/cancellations?

    Any suggestions gratefully received :)

Try Chill.ie, that's who I went with, though I admit I didn't read all the T&C's. They did have ash cover option, which I chose. Underwriter is AIG. Travelling next Tuesday to Mexico. I'd prefer if Bardabunga kept quiet another while though! :)

    Thanks folks

got sorted with one direct, specific option to choose to get the relevant cover

Also underwritten by AIG so clearly they're the ones going out on a limb for this business
