    Hi All,

In my bag i have the standard 48 pitching wedge and also a 56 Cleveland. The last 6 games i struggled with any shot from 100yards or less, i either over shoot or leave it short. I have spent time practicing this shot at the range and changing my swing a little and ball position with no success.

A few people recommended getting a 52 wedge which they say is perfect for this shot. I am looking for opinions from anyone who has this club in their bag and when do they use this club and from what distance?

I've started looking at Mizuno JPX.

    Cheers.

A full 52 degree wedge swing will go approx 15 yards less than a full pw,15 yards more than 56 sand iron.It wouldnt do any harm having it in the bag.But for shots inside 80 yards you will have to improve your technique to get distance control.i.e develop a 1/4 swing,1/2 swing,3/4 swing etc. Also by taking the hands out of the hit and leave your body control the movement through the ball is the best way to control distance.
Best video ive seen for pitching technique is this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHxLAFB9zLQ

    Probably. Most people carry one.

But....dont expect it to solve the problem you describe. A full 52 hit will give you one more yardage. But only one.
You should be able to play less than full shots with your 48 and probably need to practice more shots in that range to get a feel, hit 3/4 swing shots, choke down and inch on the shaft to take some length off the shot etc. Even those who carry a 52 wouldnt play all that differently and forgot their 52 some day. They would just 'manufacture' shots with the 48 rather than manufacturing them with the 48.

The JPX wedges are definitely a good easy to hit wedge, I was using vokeys for years and went to the JPX's, the traditional blade wedges are lovely looking and have a great feel, but as a 13 hpc, I'm just not good enought to benifit from them.
Cleveland also do a cavity back wedge that looks traditional at address, I forget the model, but also ment to be good.

It depends on technique nd what kind of irons you carry. If you are a pretty consistant striker and want to play full shots sure, then an aw from your irons if you can get one. But if you are thinking a longer range SW, I found it is good to go with a Cleveland type one and use it for shots that you might come up short, its a good long chip club too.

I have 4 wedges in my bag and it took the guts of 2 years to get the yardages under control..standard pw,52,58,64.. i use the pw from 115. 52 for 100-105. 58 from 75 and the 64 for greenside bunkers and tricky up and down lob shots.

Thanks all for the advice and tips, great to get some other views.

@agusta, that's a great video, pretty much some of the same routine a Golf instructor had me doing before. I guess i need to practice more on the chipping. I have a habit of having a more open stance and longer swing.

I think the gap wedge is an essential club, otherwise you're probably looking at about a 25-30 yard disatance gap between your sand wedge and pitching wedge and that's just too much. It would make more sense to play without a 6 iron or something than without the gap because obviously the closer to the green, the more accurate you want to be.

I tend to have a lot of wedges into greens and for me the gap wedge is just perfect from 100m/110 yards.

Ive a 48 pw from my taylormade TP set (2006 forged CB) 52 56 and 58 taylormade TP wedges. The 58 has very little bounce and it makes a great all round short club.

Another thought, Is your PW really 48?? -Mine is actually 44, which is pretty much leaves me with a 52 and a 60.

I carry a 52 degree, for me it helps fill the gap between my 56 degree which I can hit 75 yards full shot and pw which I can hit 110 yards so i find it dose come in handy .

Pw lofts vary a lot alright. More high kick high forgiving irons tend to have stronger lofts.

You dont *need* one but it could be useful.

My pw is 46* & i have a gap wedge of 54* so when i said to my pro i needed a 50* for 100 yard shots, he disagreed and said i just needed to learn how to play a 100 yard shot with my pw or 9 iron.

Took a while but i got it sussed eventually. Though buying the 50* would probably have been easier ;)

It's about gapping really. My pw is 45 so I have a 50, 55 and 60 in my wedges which is perfect really.

Still need to learn 1/2 etc shots though as others have said.

I have 45; 50, 54, 58. Think the 52 would sort out your problems alright.
