    Hi Folks,

I am thinking if buying one of these and wanted to see if there is anything particular to watch out for? It has about 80k miles. I can see it has a FSH from the UK, it is an import.

Has anybody any feedback on them?

My brother has an older 1.9 which has just passed 250k miles and seems to be indestructible.

    Thanks,

    B.

1.6 engine in them isn't that great.
Go for the bigger one if you can.

I had a loan of a Mk VII Golf with that engine and despite it only being 5 speed, it was quite nippy in the Golf so I cannot imagine it being lost in the Octavia. In saying that if I had to chose between 2 identical cars except one was 2.0 litre then I'd choose that over the 1.6.

New Golf is lighter than the old one, which in turn is lighter than that shape octavia.

Unless the 2 litre is drastically more expensive I would go with that. 6th gear will make motorways more tolerable too.

Fair enough, I never drove a MkVI with that engine.

Slightly off topic but my biggest bug bear with the Golf was the lack of cruise control, my right foot was numb after the trip from Belfast to Limerick.

Just on the Octavia's, I'm also in the market for an Automatic 1.6 or 1.9 diesel around this year - has anyone got any real world mpg figures for these?

Would it be noticeably lower than a manual?

Was thinking of importing from the UK but the revenue's VRT valuation is so far off the real world price I don't think I'd bother

next door neighbour changed from 2.0D Golf to 1.6 Octavia a year ago and regrets it since, simply from the pov of poke. They needed the boot room but the car is just too sluggish in comparison. Ive driven both and would agree. My wife has an older 1.9 Golf and its better than their 1.6. A mate of mine who is a sales rep also had a 1.6D Passat a couple of years ago for 6 months - he went back to a 2.0 Avensis as soon as he could. But he's not worrying about fuel or running costs.

The car is not dangerously slow or anything, its just slow on the pick up. Cruising they are not that bad and the space in the back of the Octavia is fantastic. Its hugely economical too - neighbour reluctantly admits its a good bit ahead of the Golf they had. If you want space and economy and can accept it being a little less responsive (and the cheaper spec level which invaraibly is on most of the 1.6 Octavias because they were entry models) then the car itself is as reliable as you will get, cheap for parts and repairs and resale punches above its weight.

Just on another issue, neighbour's car is fitted with a factory SatNav and they have had endless annoying trouble with it for some reason and garage cant seem to get to the bottom of it.

I drove a Golf 1.6Tdi DSG last night, took it out to a customer to collect his car.

50km drive, average speed of 70km/h, mainly M50 / M1, and that was showing 65.4mpg when I got to my destination - equates to 4.3L/100km.

Was showing 41.4 mpg before I got to the M50, and that was through start/stop, traffic light, city traffic etc.

By the end of the M50, it was up to almost 70mpg, and it's the higher speeds on the M1 that brought it down to 65mpg. Very efficient up to 100km/h, but suffers above that.

Just brought a Leon 1.6Tdi ST (manual) around, that's been brought up from Waterford. Average Speed of 92km/h and that was showing 5.6L/100km for that journey - to get that average speed I'd say it spent most of the 160 ish KM's sitting around 120km/h (or over) and that's why the figures aren't great.

My parents have an 11 reg octavia 1.6tdi elegance. I think the engine is fine in it for tipping around. You won't think its slow around town or at lower speeds. The issue is when you trying to overtake something at 80-90 kmh it just doesn't pull that terribly well at that speed even dropping down gears. The older 1.9 tdi 105bhp even though it's the same power torque as the 1.6tdi is a good bit quicker overtaking in that situation as I have a 1.9tdi golf so am comparing the too from experience.

For a normal person who doesn't want major power they'll find the octavia fine as I said you don't feel a lack of power most of the time and it will feel like a rocket compared to a 1.4 petrol focus or 1.0 l yaris so I suppose it all depends on the person. Just ensure you get a decent spec the likes of a entry level classic model is a truly horrible place to sit in.

Theres loads of power in the 1.6 but having said that in something like the Passat it may not be so good. My grandad has a 131 Golf DSG with the 1.6 and finds it great, also have heard good reports about the manual too.
I don't think any engine thats built will ever be as bulletproof as the 1.9TDI though
