Transport box or cage?

    Lads,

First post in this forum. I have an estate car and I am looking to get a transport box for 4 cockers. The main reason why I want to get one is for safety in case of an accident. These seem good www.dogtransportbox.com

Wondering if someone could recommend an alternative box in terms of quality/price?

Also is there any advantage to getting a heavy duty cage over a transport box? Off the top of my head: can use rear view mirrior, increase visibility and light for dogs, etc. Would a heavy duty cage be safer than a transport box?

    Cheers.

Why not make a custom box to fit, yourself 3/8" Ply with Wire Mesh Doors . If you are unable to build one yourself a carpenter will put on together for you at a fraction of the cost of a commercially made box. Then a few coats of Varnish and the Box will be weathered. You can design the box the way you want it and to suit your Car, not a generic size....

I suppose I could alright but how robust would the ply wood be in an accident?

At the moment I have a guard between the boot and seats. I read an article during the week about dog safety in a car accident. One scenario is the car being rear-ended, boot opens and the dogs jumping out of the car in the middle of the road.

I wonder which is stronger: 6mm Polypropylene used in the transport box or a heavy duty cage?

Unless you are sandwiched between 2 trucks the Plywood box will be more than able to cope...

The Box would have Mesh Doors ( with Locks) on it , if the Boot lid opens the Dogs wont get out

Obviously the Polypropylene is stronger , but so is armour plate. are you expecting to be in an accident ?

    I hope not! :)

Reading the article in the paper got me thinking about my dogs loose in the back. I never really thought about it before. I am on the road every day with my dogs so I am just trying to figure out the best option.

I did check out pre-made cages online but none really gave me the space I needed as the dimensions of my boot need something custom made.

I have read some posts on here about www.dogtransportbox.com and they got good reviews. There doesn't seem to be many options for custom made boxes or cages here in Ireland.

Here is one review for www.dogtransportbox.com

The plastic box is the only job, i sold that one to Charlie10 as i needed a bigger one.The plastic ones are superbly made and are worth every penny , they can be easily washed out and disinfected after use and have drain holes to let the water out , they also have stainless steel doors ,hinges and latches.
Your dog is going through ditches and fields that have ****e and slurry spread all over them so any bacteria or germs will breed in the box if it is not properly disinfected, you can fully scrub and disinfect the plastic box and it will stay like new for the rest of your shooting days ,if you scrub and wash a wooden box like that you will not get as long out of it and it will stink like **** as all the ****e soaks into the timber.
Think about it 400 euro and you have a box for the next 30 years..thats 13 euro a year.

Definately try a DIY version first. I made one for my astra estate and its the muts nuts. Designed it so as to have room got my wellies and game bag on one side and the gun slip on the other.

    Forgot to add the picture, here it is;

The point about getting the wooden box wet is correct, but it can be solved by lining the box with fiberglass mat and epoxying in place.

    That looks well made.

I got a box made up from dog transport boxes a few months back for my collie and lab. Can't recommend them highly enough! I was concerned that the box would be too dark for my collie who can be a very nervy traveller so they put in mesh windows on the top of the box. They also can include escape hatches at the back so in the event of an accident you can access your dogs through the back seats if the boot wouldn't open/isn't accessible. The boxes are also really light and easy to clean/lift in and out of the car. I had my collie in a heavy duty cage in the boot before I got my lab and I can honestly say the cage was a pain in comparison. They are pricey but worth it in my opinion.

I have a Kia estate aswell (2012 version). I was talking to Mark who said he fitted one to a Kia already so must have been yours. Do you have the 2012 model or the earlier one?

Looking at the photos on facebook nearly all the boxes have 2 doors - thought that was standard so I'll check that with him tomorrow.

Sorry just remembered all boxes have 2 doors, my problem was there was a divider between the two doors making the space very small for my pointer and springer the pointer was big and was cramped in one side, the divider cannot be removed so if ordering tell him to leave it out and have one big space

I'm looking for a box for a 2010 Skoda Superb Estate . Would the box you bought take 3 springers ? I would need two compartments , 1 compartment to take one dog (who can get a bit nasty with the others and needs to be separated) and a 2nd compartment to take 2 dogs. Do you think the 2 door/2 compartment transport box that they supply would suit ? Appreciate your opinion. Thanks

I have sent an email to that company asking them which of their boxes would suit/fit a Skoda Superb estate and be able to transport 3 springers. I must say their boxes look to be very expensive but then again from what others on here say it seems that the quality is very good and I suppose at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Is the box you have light enough for your to be able to lift out of the boot handy enough or would you need two men to do that ?

Thanks for the advice lads. I took the plunge and bought from www.dogtransportbox.com (also known as Plastic Promotions).

On the face of it the box looked to be very pricey but once I received it I was glad I bought from them , as it really is top quality. Absolute gentlemen to deal with as well and I highly recommend them.

How much did that size set you back , i sold one slightly smaller than that on here a while back , regretted it since, was meant to buy the bigger one but ended up spending the few quid on something else

If you got it for Euro 350 you got an absolute bargain. The box alone is £ 320 plus £ 30 for the divider and another £ 30 for the bumper cover , so £ 380 . Then it is another £ 25 for delivery to Rep. of Ireland so £ 405 in total . The best they would do for me was to round it off to £ 400 , so about Euro 500 all in delivered to your door. For sure it's pricey but then again it is very good quality , light enough to lift in and out handy enough , waterproof , stainless steel doors and easily cleaned.

I could be wrong on the figures it's a while ago now,in any case go for it you won't regret it.
