As far as I can remember you need to get a C3 or above (higher level) to do the honours maths class. You'll probably be in the mathematical studies class, which is essentially pass maths.

Ya i picked mathematical studies because the other options were maths honours or applied maths,i didnt even know what mathematical studies was, hope its easy, thanks for the help ðŸ‘ðŸ‘

From what i remember Pass maths for 1st yr is basically hons leaving though..bit of algebra(matrices and the like) and calculus(integration, differentiation) etc. So you might not get away from it but you'll have far more time to work on getting better

I liked integration and differentiation in school, i was terrible at functions tho..think i only got a D because of the bellcurve, do all the credits in 1st year go for the exams?? 🙊ðŸ˜ðŸ˜•ðŸ˜±

Labs will contribute a small percent of your final grade( i think, its been a while), and also xmas exams will get you another couple of percent(each subject is different)
I wouldnt worry too much, first year is essentially leaving cert all over again so if you have done some of your subjects in l.cert you will have less new stuff to learn and can focus on the stuff you dont

Ive done biology chemistry and physics for my leaving so should have a good ground basis for them , hopefully :)

Cant afford a repeat lol :) thanks

Ah you're sorted so! Having done physics before they put people in a different class to those who havnt so it might be slightly harder i dunno! I fooking hated physics :pac:

Ive also done the three sciences, physics in 6 months on my own, but I dont like the mechanics section, would it be possible for me to be in the class where people havent done physics before? Or would they just say no?? :L

There's two physics lectures: one for people who have done physics and one for those who haven't. Just go to the one for people who haven't done it and you'll be grand. Even if I had done physics for the LC, I would still go to the physics for those who haven't because Mark Lang (the lecturer for semester 1) is a legend.

It's easy to pass Mathematical Studies and Physics as long as you do the homework (hint: go to tutorials, they basically do the homework for you)

Ah mark lang..you will soon learn to love mechanics young sapling! The only part of physics i liked because of that man!

Do you know whos the lecturer for Maths honours? :)

Mathematical studies is hard enough if you don't have a flair for maths. I thought algebra was fine but found calculus quite difficult. Managed to get a C+ in it without putting too much work in so as long as you keep on top of your assignments, attend tutorials etc you'll be fine. :)

I got an A (80%) in MA161 Mathematical Studies and only got a B3 in pass maths at leaving cert! No joke. If you apply yourself you can get good results. I went to lectures, tutorials and used the sums (support for undergraduate maths students) service and this all helped get me the mark I got. There's a lot more help services in uni than in school. I'm going into 3rd year now and looking back now - really 1st year was not hard - you just have 4 modules for your 4 different subjects and 1 exam per subject at christmas and summer exams. Plus there is a lot more continuous assessment than in school (usually 30-40% of final module grade is from continuous assessments).

I only had done 1 leaving cert science - biology. And I took biology, chemistry, physics and maths in 1st year. I got an A in maths (70%+) and Bs (60-69%) in the other subjects.

Do you have any idea what subject you plan on specialising in? Or do you just want to try out the different areas in 1st year and see what you like? Did you get the information booklet (academic handbook) sent out to you in the post? Read that before starting college. It explains a lot!

I found all the subjects fine in 1st year. Chemistry I found the hardest. Physics had a bit of a learning curve at the beginning but its gets easier with practice. The online homework (wileyplus) can be tricky but its only 10% of your grade so don't worry too much about it; the exams at christmas and summer are more straightforward - if you've attended lectures, you will have no problems. For physics the lecturers write down a lot of the notes on projector so you'd be lost if you didn't go to lectures. Your at an advantage having done all sciences for your LC.

I only done ordinary physics for my LC, got the A1..i was never going to count it so i suppose i put no effort into it at all! Im hoping to specialise in the biology side of things maybe microbiologyor that, im doing a masters in astrobiology after it its what ive always wanted to do but unfortunately there is no course for it in ireland :(

There might be by the time you finish 4 year science degree. I'd say go for undenominated science. You'll get to try out the different areas in 1st year, then you'll know better what to specialize in. You could always email the lecturers and ask what area would be best (biology or physics) if you want to do astrobiology after. Physics is the broadest science. Physicists study lifeforms too (its called biophysics). So I would think that would be the best foundation for astrobiology.
