Can someone recommend a car for my brother. He's 21 and has been used to driving reasonably powerful cars to now (i.e. 2.0t Saab, 520d bmw), so he want's something with a reasonable amount of power whilst being able to get insurance with his age. also wants it to be reasonably 'sporty'/ It will be his first car so no no claims etc. Budget 2-3k. I'd be thinking something along the lines of a 1.9tdi sportline golf?

License type? Has he got any NCB in his own name?

    Full license, no NCB

His age and lack of NCB/insurance experience is going to make it difficult for him to get reasonable quotes in the kind of car that he has been used to driving and I suspect wants to buy. Best thing he can do is pick a few models that he likes and stick in some online quotes to see what kind of figures he gets back.

I know every young lad wants something flash to drive around in, but it's just not going to happen unless someone is fronting their insurance.

It's like an apprenticeship, you have to serve your time in a Fiesta/Polo/106 and build up an ncb, get your full licence and then go and buy a BMW or whatever you're having yourself.

Insurance companies are loading young drivers with most VAG cars these days, even the soul destroying 1.4 litre variants.
