So I'm selling my mountain bike to upgrade to a hybrid bike because I'm getting more into long distance cycling (plus the mountain bike is too heavy)
I've never really known or bothered to find out how many gears are on it but want to be able to tell people with the ad I'm putting up with it.

    Thanks in advance :)

Technically it's 3x6 as some of the gear ratios overlap.

That's some quality pedantry right there.

you may find it difficult to find a hybrid which co-ordinates with your socks in the way the current bike does.

Surely overlap is irrelevant to the "number of gears" question, to which the answer is 9: 3 at the front and 6 at the back.

Are you using the gears correctly? With a 3/6 set up your lowest gear should be very low - i.e. chain on smallest sprocket at the front and largest on rear.

While a hybrid may be lighter, it may not be 'geared' so low.
