Doing the 'right' thing

Is it just me or does any one else have problems with 'doing the right thing'?

Maybe I should have posted this in PI but.....

I always feel like I have to do the right thing ethically/morally but sometimes I feel like I can't be bothered.

For example: There is a situation at work where the company is probably stealing money from my and my OH's paycheck and another couple who work at the same company. The girl of the other couple is really upset and I completely understand why.

I know that I should stand up with her and fight this with her because it's the right thing to do but I also feel like I can't be bothered.

My OH always makes fun of me because I always without fail have to do the 'right' thing. I've never told him this but some times I would rather not.

What's wrong with me? Am I the only person that this happens to?

The company you're working for is stealing from you and you're not doing anything about it?

But in this case would doing the right thing not be of benefit to you.

If you werent bothered if it was just the other couples paycheck affected and you were asking should I do the right thing, i would see why you would ask but in this scenario you should fight for your money.

(if i read this right of course)

'The right way' is always going to be subjective and unique to an individual. What you do isn't the right way or wrong way; in your eyes it's just the way you see it. Sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't do but it isn't necessarily the wrong thing or the right thing to do. It's just our way. You do whatever feels 'right' to you and ignore what anyone else deems it... Live and die and all that.

    I'm trippin' mad balls here...

Hold on, someone is taking money from you and you're not bothered to stop this? Eh, if it ever does gets sorted then I'll put your spare cash to good use, you obviously don't miss it.

It does sound absurd. I probably should have said that I'm working in China and so there isn't really many laws here to protect foreigners from being taken advantage of.

So fighting it would mean travelling to head office and making a big scene and threatening to quit....blah, blah, blah.

We still don't know for sure because all of the other foreigners are bending over and taking it up the arse from the company and think that complaining isn't what 'China' is all about.

I've got my foot out the door because my contract ends in 3 months. That might be what is causing my apathy.

But I will stand up with them when it comes to but I really want to know if other people sometimes feel that doing the right thing is annoying!

OP says they always have to do the 'right thing'.

OP's actions indicate they don't usually do the 'right thing'.

I usually try to do the 'right thing', so am at odds as to why I am reading and posting in this thread.

Sometimes doing the "right" thing unfortunately can lead to untold amounts of hassle. One lesson I harshly learned as a teenager was intervening in domestic disputes, i.e. a fella tearing strips off his partner in public. In my experience, intervening when a man strikes his partner will often result in the woman turning on you just as quickly. At 16 myself and a friend stopped one fella rag-dolling and slapping his girlfriend around a park in Cork City only to have her turn and try and scratch my eyes out as soon as we pulled him off.

Working on doors I saw the same thing occur countless times. As bad as it sounds, unless she's getting seriously damaged, I've often refused to intervene unless your one is looking like she's seriously in danger.

doing the 'right thing' isn't always the best course of action, as situations are never black and white.

OP may be confusing the 'right' thing with the 'least effort' thing

No the 'right' thing is always way more effort.

The problem is that I can't be bothered doing the 'right' thing all the time because it's draining.

What company is it? China seems to be a bit of wild west but could you not threaten to quit your contract early if they don't pay you properly seeing as they're not following their end?

Exactly. It's less hassle so it's not worth the effort. I know a few people like that. Can get very frustrating.

The way that my OH and I are looking at it is that the massive hassle to get the money might not be worth the amount we get.

We earn a decent wage and are nearly at the end of our contract so we have a good bit of money saved.

Ah, yeh, that's probably what we will have to do. But we're right at the end of our contract anyway so they might tell us where to go, if you know what I mean.

It's a Chinese company. It's not only the foreigners they screw over. I've lost some amazing Chinese co-workers because of their shenanigans.

No, sometimes the right thing is doing nothing.

It's all down to what you can live with, I guess? Although you do get positive boost from doing the right thing, sometimes.

Run down your contract and then report them. I can understand the apathy, corruption is so endemic in China as to be institutionalized. If you make the complaint after you get your last paycheck however the worst that can happen is that you'll get the money owed. Perhaps threaten to report the company to it's regulatory authority (if such a thing exists) as the new permier has quite the hard on for rooting out (others) corruption, people get sentenced to death for that sort of thing in China lately. It might make them nervous!

That's honestly what I would prefer to do because I know that I could stick it to them right at the end.

It's the other girl who wants to tackle the issue now and i know that I should back her up rather than only looking out for my own interests. Because it's the 'right' thing to do.
