Hey guys, I am new here so I cant post any links or anything. But, I was thinking of buying a bike for going on trails around ireland (i.e Ballyhoola) and was wondering if the "Apollo Gradient Mens Mountain Bike would be a good purchase? Its 250e on halfords.

A friend of mine has 2 teenage sons who wanted to try mountain biking. They went up to Ballinastoe a couple of times and rented bikes there at €30 a pop. The two lads reckoned they should just buy bikes at this stage, rather than shelling out each time. They bought Apollos. First time they brought them out, the suspension in both bikes broke irreparably. The moral of the story: stay away!

Good for grass trails around your local park or nipping down to the shops, that's about it...

Is this the bike, you were thinking about?
If so, please avoid like the plague, if you are thinking of riding in places like Ballyhoura.
This bike, as already stated, is suitable for grass trails, but not for anything more demanding.
There is a Utube video out there, that purports to be a review of the Apollo.
Please ignore it, It is sponsored by Halfords.

Could someone recommend a decent entry level down hill mountain bike?

Is something like this the best option? Or could you get anything for less?

Would be ok for a bit of gentle mountain biking, for example the Greenwood Loop

Perfect so, I only intend on going gentle for a while anyway. And then save up for something in the 450 to 550 range :)

Probably will end up switching to a voodoo hoodoo or carrera kraken in a year or two, whenever I get better and actually require a professional bike :) Thanks guys I will save up for the Valour :)
