Shredder/chipper

Asked this on the gardening forum today but no joy yet.

My Brother and I are going to tidy up a farm hasn't been used in 5 years and probably hasn't been maintained in at least 15. We want to cut back some hedges and trees that are really overgrown this autumn. We were interested in buying a good shredder/chipper that could deal with branches up to 3-4 inches.

Any recommendations and what price? We would be willing to pay for a pro one as nearly every field has hedges to be maintained every year so we want something that would last.

Would hiring one be an easier option?
We did a lot of work on ditches here in last ten years and one you have the ditch done its only a matter off running a hedge trimmer over it every yr

There is weeks of work and it will only be two of us the odd weekend and some evenings which will be getting shorter. There are overgrown hedges, gorse growing as much as 25 feet out from ditches and huge areas of trees and bushes to be cleared. We could do all the work and pile them up and then hire the shredder but we are still interested in buying one. What one did you hire?

Could you get in a lad with a saw on a hedge trimmer and Ger him to cut hedges down to size and you do the rest.
Never shredded anything here. Burned it all. Ye can branches ye know.
Ours had 30yrs of no maintainance so ye can guess it was prob twice as bad as yours

You can burn branches on your farm?

    Nobody will stop you...
Just tell the local fire station so they know to ignore any phone call to your farm...which if they do turn up will cost you a bomb

Isn't there some rule about burning if you're near forestry too?

Yes... Not applied on this farm now, the hill got overgrown when it was and coilte ended up helping to burn it(years and years ago) so we do controlled burning inside the distance.

My advice on the mulcher, cut all you like pile it up and then when you can't cut no more hire a mulcher for the day and keep it goin all day.

Anyway thanks for the advice. Still though I'd like to buy and do this at my own pace and not burn anything. I'll have machine again.

So can anyone recommend one. Either one you own or have hired.

why not sell the ditches for firewood and as part of the agreement they chip the spoil. maybe also instead of money they fence also

    win on money
    win on time
    win on capital expenditure

All very helpful. Gorse isn't good fire wood anyway. I'll start again. I want to buy a wood chipper/shredder. I have the money. Could anyone recommend one?

sorry I missed the Gorse bit in original postings

I would suggest a tow behind one as they are heavy on the back of a tractor. Ill ask a client on Monday what one he has.

I know he is all the time replacing belts when he is at ever green stuff.
