Chose the wrong course, what do I do now?

I got accepted into a course I first believed I'd be able for, however now I've realised it's a lot harder then I imagined, I've also realised that instead enterprise computing will get me into what I want to do, however dcu are saying that course is full and I've no chance of getting it?

As this is my first time going to college, I don't want to start a course I know I'm going to fail and end up losing my grant money, as it means if I go to do a course next year I won't get the grant...

So what should I do? I'm considering just not doing the course I've been accepted for and replying next year to college, btw I'm 24.

I am not fully up-to-date on this area of things, but I think it is possible for you to transfer between courses as long as its within DCU. However, if they are saying it is full! It's hard to say what to do next.
Who told you the other course was full?

    Hi,

I received an email off a lady called Karen, who's the faculty head in the computing department, she basically said enterprise computing is full and that usually after the first semester students can transfer but she reckons it will still be full then and not possible to.

    You have three choices:
    1. Go into the course you got offered(CA, I presume?) and try to transfer during the year or at the end of the year.
    2. Go into the course you got offered and stick with it.
    3. Don't go to college this year and re-apply for Enterprise Computing through the CAO for 2015. I'm not sure how it would work with SUSI if you do this. Ask them

    Dont panic

Lots of students find that they dont like their courses and decide they want to defer/withdrew with no financial implications.
Look up their website and read up on the deadlines involved.
You dont say if you have registered or not - you dont have to do anything you dont want to. If you have registered for your programme you just need to follow their procedures about leaving.
You will not lose your grant if you complete everything by their deadlines.
Why not try out a few classes and see how you feel about it.

Normally you have until 31st Oct to withdraw but check this out with them. If this applies you will not lose your grant. You simply reapply next year if you reapply to colleges.

I wonder who Karen is? The faculty head in the dcu school of computing is not named Karen. Actually from looking at the list of staff, there doesn't appear to be a Karen listed at all.

Hi, sorry just realised she's a senior administrator in the school of computing faculty.

Enterprise and Computer Applications overlap on quite a few modules throughout the degree, nothing from one degree is worthless in the other in my opinion if you're considering transferring after first semester.

We had a few people swap from EC to CA, but I'm unsure if anyone swapped the other way around, to my knowledge it seemed pretty straight forward but I don't know the exact details behind it, but I do know one person had changed within the first week. At the very least wait and get in contact with your year head and talk to him about it, you definitely have until at least mid-October to withdraw from the course.

Yes I was thinking this, other posts before are correct, for now you need to stick with the course, i.e. dont drop out! but, you need to talk to the head of the programme you wish to move to. Not someone in Admin

DCU will do their best to facilitate any student who wishes to change course, ive seen 2nd year science move to business for example and that's a give change. Internal transfers within DCU is really up to the chair of the course, and yes, it will depend on places being available, however, if the course is close to the one you have picked, they may say stick with first year and in 2nd year we will transfer you for example. But really this is all guess work until you chat with them.

    Hi,

Who would I need to talk with to find the name of the head of enterprise computing out?

Based on this page - computing.dcu.ie/undergraduate/ec/bsc-enterprise-computing-dc120

it would be - Prof. Joe Morris

His staff page is here, and you will find his email address - dcu.ie/info/staff_member.php?id_no=1343

Explain to him your situation, that you got on the other course etc and want to change etc etc. Hopefully it all works out for you.
And please dont forgot to let us know how you get on, it may help the next person that has this problem also :)
