Hello, right I don't really know how I would deal with the issue I'm having here. I live in a 1970's bungalow and the back of my fire place seems fairly worn/rotted/burnt out not sure how to describe it. I have a back burner and the back of the fireplace is iron. Replacing the whole fireplace is not really an option and the only thing I can think of doing is placing a steel plate against the existing back forming a new back as such. Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea or a waste of time? Also where could I source a piece of steel to do this? Many thanks.

just be very wary covering up the fireplace with a sheet of steel with a hole fore the chimney, as over time the large space left inside will fill up with soot. you will then have a fair dangerous chimney fire from all this soot buildup

It would also need to be Boiler Quality Steel. Ordinary steel won't do.
You might have a little trouble locating a small piece. your best bet would be to start with any local Steel works
who might have some in stock from a previous job.
It generally only comes in 20ft Sheets.
