    Hi

Just looking for a bit of advice please?

OK so I am heading solo on a wee 3 month trip to Oz and NZ in a few weeks and have plenty of queries, apologies if they sound stupid but there just something I’d like a bit more knowledge on.

    1) Flying from Dublin –London-KL-Sydney all on the one ticket so am I right in saying that my bag will be checked through the whole way to Sydney even though it’s with two different airlines?

    2) I have an iphone 4s which I will need to get unlocked and then plan to just buy a local sim in Oz and then NZ and work away from that, that is the way to do it yes? I assume my contract with Vodafone will be paid every month and what do I just get a ready to go local sim and top up with credit when i need to? I assume this sim would enable me to contact home no problem?

    3) Any recommendations on what type of backpacker insurance I should get? Or is it all much of a muchness?

    4) Have booked a flight from NZ to OZ 2 months ago but have not received the second email with ticket confirmation that comes after the initial booking ( money has come up on my CC though), is this common? Should I send an email?

    5) My initial flight out is a return due home at xmass, but I am wondering if I decided to stay, could that return flight ticket be delayed a month or so, or is it gone and I would just have to book another flight?

    6) Any advice for the long haul flights?

    7) I have a few hostels booked for a few places where I am definite on dates but I plan to travel around just making plans one or two days in advance and then booking hostels one day or 2 in advance , would this be ok or would they be booked out and I would need to book weeks in advance?

    8) I am only in Sydney for 3 days or so and I want to fill as much in as I can there. Climb Sydney harbour, opera house, bondi beach anything else that is good to see or do there??

Thanks in advance for any advice you give me!

Can only answer some of these.

    1. Yes

    3. If you're going to be doing sky-diving, kayaking etc or other adventure sports make sure and get the relevant insurance and make sure there's money on the policy to air lift you back to Ireland.

    4. Yes, I'd follow that up.

    5. You'll have to check the policy on your individual ticket

    6. I always bring snacks with me and something to read. Take your shoes off and put on wooly socks, bring a fleece (planes are always cold), walk around every few hours. Set your watch to your destination time as soon as you take off. Is your flight with Malysia Airlines? I went to KL with them recently, left London around midday and arrived to KL about 6am. There's a BK and an O'Brien's sandwich bar there, lots of nice shops and a outdoor tree canopy which looked great. MH flight was excellent, great choice of movies (I watched 6 episodes of the big bang theory in a row), songs, little videos on your destination.

    7. You should be fine. It's good to have open plans, obviously if there's a big event on somewhere you'll need to book in advance

    8. I loved Darling Harbour, Manly is nice, do a cruise around the harbor. Sit out in the main green area (can't remember the name), go to Coogee Beach.

    Hi OP,

I'm only slightly envious of your travel plans :o

I flew from Cork - London - KL -Melbourne with Malaysian Airlines last year, I couldn't fault them.

    1. Yes...your bag will accompany all the connecting flights over - don't worry about it. However, the one thing I would recommend is keeping all your valuables in your carry on bag - because if your bag did get misplaced and you were without it for a few days then at least you will have your money, phone charger etc. in your carry on bag.

    2. Get your phone unlocked - I had to and it worked perfectly with an Oz SIM card.

    3. I just got a standard travel insurance that covered me for the duration of my trip.

    4. Follow this up for sure!

    5. I think some airlines allow you to alter your return date free of charge.

    6. Long haul flights are a piece of cake now because of the amount of entertainment you can choose from. Lots of people wear non-clingy clothing - I found sometimes that it can get a bit colder - so an extra jumper would be a good idea. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated and get up to stretch your legs as much as you can.

    7. Some of the ''better'' hostels book up quiet fast but if your not too fussy then booking on the day or day before should be ok.

    8. Sydney is a great city - a lot to see and do. I would recommend taking a day or two to go out to the Blue mountains and Jenolan Caves and the town of Katoomba! The Coogee to Bondi walk is gorgeous! its quiet long but it's incredible! I love a harbour tour, really enjoyed it and you get to see a lot of what the city looks like from the sea! Good luck with the bridge climb (I didn't have the courage to do it!)

    Enjoy!
