errors in the previous years VAT claims

How long do I have to correct the previous years Vat returns? Is it 4 years?
I have taken over some books and noticed there were some incorrect Vat inputs for the exempted expenses and also I found some bills never taken into account (mainly Light&Heat). How far should I go back in correcting them, or is it better to leave it alone and start correctly from now on?
Do I just adjust my current period liability for the difference from last years or there is a form to fill out?
The last year end Vat 3 was filed for 2012, For 2013 Vat was filed until August only and then only estimates have been paid. I'm just about to complete 2013 (vat paid 4monthly).
Does it mean I can only correct as far as Jan 2013? Or will I go by accounting year?
Last accounts are until June 2012, 2013 pending. Or is it simply 4 years back? Or no corrections allowed at all?
Hope it's all not too confusing...
